Instruments for the care of pressure injury in pediatrics and hebiatrics: an integrative review of the literature

Abstract: Objective:to identify existing instruments in the scientific literature about the care of pressure injuries in pediatric and hebiatric patients. Method:an integrative review that selected 32 articles from the PubMed/Medline, LILACS, Scopus and CINAHL databases using the descriptors pressure ulcer, decubitus ulcer, pediatrics, adolescent and protocols and their equivalent terms in Portuguese and Spanish. “…In view of the proven high risk, it is necessary for the professionals to know about the predictive risk instruments. Currently, the B-QS is the most used and most reported instrument in the scientific literature for pediatric patients admitted to critical care ( 11 , 28 ) . As previously stated, the B-QS is an effective instrument; however, the GS was specifically developed for the study population, having greater accuracy, greater predictive capacity, and can even be applied to a broadest age group (0 to 18 years old) ( 29 ) .…”

“…The prevention of PI requires prior and accurate identification of the risk score of each patient and, related to this, it is essential to implement a set of preventive measures. The availability of reliable instruments that predict the risk of critical pediatric patients developing PI ( 10 - 11 ) is crucial to this process.…”

“…With the technological and scientific advances, there has been a change in the profile of the patients who are assisted in the health services, requiring increasingly complex care and specific knowledge to ensure patient safety. However, despite the advances, the incidence of pressure ulcers is high, resulting in high costs for the health systems due to increases in the hospitalization times, in the risk of infections and in the need for care related to the treatment of these patients [26][27][28] .…”

“…2 Although they are more frequent in the adult, and especially in the geriatric population, pressure injuries can develop also in children. 3 Aetiology is variable, but the most important role is played by medical conditions that cause reduced mobility or require the need for medical devices, that are responsible for PIs in 38.5%-90% of paediatric cases. Patients with this type of PI tend to be younger.…”
