Vulnerability to alcohol consumption, spiritual transcendence and psychosocial well-being: test of a theory

Abstract: Objective: to demonstrate the relations among vulnerability, self-transcendence and well-being in the young adult population and the effect of each of these variables on the adoption of low-risk consumption conducts. Method: quantitative and cross-sectional correlation study using structural equations analysis to test the relation among the variables. Results: an inverse relation was evidenced between vulnerability to alcohol consumption and spiritual transcendence (β-0.123, p 0.025) and a direct positive rela… Show more

“…However, multiple studies support the protective role of spirituality and self-transcendence in vulnerability to alcohol consumption that demonstrates the protective role of human beings' internal development to maintain conducts that contribute to states of well-being and health. [42][43][44] In addition, a review of the literature on harm avoidance documented inconsistent ndings among alcohol abuser's populations [29,45,46]. However, the results were not statistically signi cant in the present study.…”

“…Similarly, Haugan () found that self‐transcendence significantly affected well‐being in elder residents whose feelings of vulnerability increased while residing in a nursing home. In another study, structural equation modelling to test this relationship in young adult college students further confirmed dynamics of self‐transcendence to well‐being (Díaz Heredia & Muñoz Sanchez, ). The self‐transcendence concept is also applied as a developmental resource in patients with severe illness or nurses to cope with distressful life experiences or job stress (Matthews & Cook, ; Pask, ).…”

“…The sample group selected from alcohol addicts may have led this result. According to the theory of Reeds (56,58), there is a linear relationship between psychological well-being and self-transcendence. According to the literature, inadequate psychological well-being has been reported to reduce Investigation of depressive symptoms and related variables with depressive symptoms in alcohol and substance abusers self-transcendence, in alcoholic substance addicts.…”
