Hatching Characteristics and Growth Performance of Eggs with Different Egg Shapes

Abstract: This study was carried out to identify the effect of the egg shape index on the hatchability, performance, and carcass yield of Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix Japonica). Eggs were incubated in three groups, according to three different egg shape index ( , and the results showed that females were heavier than males (p<0.05; p<0.01; p<0.001, respectively). The effect of egg shape index on slaughter weight (p<0.05), left leg weight (p<0.05), liver weight (p<0.01) and liver rate (p<0.01) was significant. Female… Show more

“…Unhatched eggs were recorded in shape index form 69.24%. This result is in agreement with the findings of Alasahan and Copur (2016).In contrast to previous research suggesting that the egg shape index does not affect hatchability (Sari et al, 2010;Lotfi et al, 2011;Taha, 2011).…”

“…Lourens (2001) reported that the average eggshell temperature of chick is 37.8ºC, on average, which may present deviations above 4ºC, depending on the position of the egg in the setter and the age of the embryo. In their study on Japanese quail eggs, Alasahan et al (2016) reported an eggshell temperature on the day of egg transfer of37.44ºC, on average, with 37.62ºC in hatched eggs and 37.14ºCin unhatched eggs. While the eggshell temperatures determined in the present study were higher than those reported by Alasahan et al (2016), it was observed that the average value and the values of the hatched and unhatched eggs showed similar alterations and were lowest in unhatched eggs.…”
