Objective: To investigate the different styles of parenting in the State of Qatar, a country that is considered a cosmopolitan hub with rapid development. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at Sidra Medicine, the only tertiary pediatric hospital in Qatar. Parents of children 3–14 years old were offered a questionnaire. Results: A total of 114 questionnaires were completed (response rate = 95%). Approximately 65% of parents were between 30 and 39 years of age. Almost 90% of parents state that they are confident of their parenting ability. More than 90% of the participating parents stated that they are responsive to their child's feeling and needs, give comfort and understanding when their child is upset, praise their child when well-behaved, give reasons why rules should be followed, help children understand the impact of their behavior, explain consequences of bad behavior, take into account their child's desire before asking him/her to do something, encourage their child to freely express him/herself when disagreeing with his/her parents, and show respect to their child's opinion. However, 60% of parents sometimes scold, yell, and criticize their child when he/she misbehaves but less than 50% of them use threats as a consequence with little or no justification. Furthermore, two-thirds of parents give consequences by putting their child off somewhere with little or no explanation. Moreover, one in four participants gives in to their child when he/she causes a commotion about something, threatens their child with consequences more often than actually giving them, and states consequences to their child and do not actually do them. Conclusion: Residents in Qatar have a mixed type of parental style (authoritative, authoritarian, and permissive). This study will guide us to raise the awareness about the types of parenting style in Qatar, in order to provide professional parenting counseling taking into consideration the cultural background.

Estilos parentais, cárie dentária, comportamento, préescolares RESUMO Objetivo: Objetivou-se associar os estilos parentais (democrático, autoritário e permissivo) com o comportamento e a prevalência de lesões de cárie de pré-escolares submetidos ao atendimento odontológico. Métodos: Em consulta inicial, pré-escolares (n = 67), de 2 a 6 anos de idade, foram avaliados quanto ao comportamento, através da escala de Frankl. Os estilos parentais de seus responsáveis foram averiguados através do Questionário de Estilos e Dimensões Parentais -Versão Reduzida (PSDQ) e a prevalência de lesões de cárie através do índice ceod. Foram coletados dados sociodemográficos e econômicos. Utilizou-se o teste do Qui-quadrado para associação entre os estilos parentais, o índice ceod, tipo de comportamento (dicotomizado em positivo e negativo) e as variáveis independentes: nível socioeconômico, ser filho único, frequentar escola e nível educacional do responsável. ANOVA seguido de Tukey foi utilizado para comparar as médias ceod e os estilos parentais. Resultados: A maioria dos pré-escolares apresentaram comportamento positivo (83,6%) e a média do ceo-d da população estudada foi 4,76 (± 3,43). Do total dos responsáveis, 49,3% eram democráticos, 44,8% permissivos e 6% autoritários. Não houve associação entre os estilos parentais e todas as variáveis investigadas (p > 0,05). Conclusão: Diante dos resultados, pode-se observar que não houve associação entre os estilos parentais avaliados, prevalência de cárie e comportamento dos pré-escolares em consulta odontológica inicial.

Investigating the effectiveness of two therapeutic modalities in enhancing self‐esteem among female adolescents

T his study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of Adlerian therapy (AT) and solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) in enhancing self-esteem among a sample of female adolescents. The researchers used the Arabic version of Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale and semi-structured interviews as data collection tools to evaluate the effectiveness of both therapies. The study sample consisted of 60 female students in the 10th and 11th grades selected from a Jordanian government school based on their low self-esteem scale scores. The participants were randomly divided into three equal groups: two experimental groups and one control group. One of the experimental groups received AT, while the other groups received training on SFBT, while the control group did not receive any treatment. Each experimental group met for one 50-minute session per week for 8 weeks. The data were analysed using one-way analysis of variance and one-way analysis of covariance . The results showed that SFBT was significantly more effective in increasing self-esteem than AT and no treatment. In addition, AT was found to be substantially more effective in enhancing self-esteem than no treatment. The researchers supported these results using data collected from the experimental groups' participants through a semi-structured interview.
