Although the scientifi c production on religiosity/spirituality (R/S) is increasing, notably from their connection with the health dimension, this theme is practically absent in Psychology training. The objective of this study was to learn the professional reality of psychotherapists regarding their clinical experiences and the R/S dimension. Twenty-four professionals from two cities in the states of São Paulo and Minas Gerais, Brazil, with an average psychotherapy experience of 10.54 years, were interviewed individually. The interviews were transcribed in full and analyzed from the R/S literature. Such a dimension is evoked as relevant for all psychotherapists, although it has not been suffi ciently addressed in their training. The exploration of R/S stems from client demands and presents at times as an important resource for intervention, while in other times hinders the development of many conditions. The recent proposals of the Psychology Councils regarding R/S are unknown by the professionals, suggesting the need for greater dialog and also the presence of such discussions in Psychology training.

The present study aims to investigate how different levels of spirituality and religiousness (high spirituality and high religiousness –S/R, high spirituality and low religiousness –S/r, low spirituality and high religiousness s/R and low spirituality and low religiousness – s/r) are associated with quality of life, depressive symptoms, anxiety, optimism and happiness among adults. A cross-sectional study was carried out among 1,046 Brazilian adults. Concerning the different levels of spirituality and religiousness, 49.2% had s/r, 26.5% S/R, 17.2% S/r and 7.1% s/R. Participants with S/R had better outcomes as compared to those with s/r and those with S/r in WHOQOL Psychological, Social Relationship and Environment, Optimism and happiness. Participants with s/R had better outcomes as compared to those with s/r in WHOQOL Psychological and Social Relationship, Optimism and happiness. Participants with S/r were different from those with s/r, with higher levels of WHOQOL Environment and happiness but also anxiety. The results revealed that, having higher levels of both spirituality and religiousness were more correlated to better outcomes than having just one of them or none of them. Likewise, having higher levels of religiousness in detriment of higher levels of spirituality was also associated with better outcomes in comparison to others.

RESUMOObjetivo: descrever como a religiosidade e a espiritualidade são empregadas pelos idosos no enfrentamento da violência doméstica. Método: este é um estudo descritivo, com abordagem qualitativa. Foi realizado em delegacias de Salvador (BA), entre agosto de 2006 e abril de 2007, por meio de levantamento de dados em boletins de ocorrência e de entrevistas semiestruturadas com nove idosos vítimas de agressão. Os discursos foram analisados mediante a técnica de análise de conteúdo. O projeto foi aprovado por um Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa, mediante parecer número 021/2004. Resultados: emergiram duas categorias: a religiosidade ou espiritualidade como alívio do sofrimento e a religiosidade ou espiritualidade para promover mudança de comportamento do agressor. Conclusão: a referência a uma divindade configurou-se como uma forma de enfrentar situações estressantes, como a dor e o sofrimento decorrentes da violência doméstica. The discourses were analyzed using content analysis technique. The project was approved by a Research Ethics Committee (report No. 021/2004). Results: two categories emerged: religiosity or spirituality as relief from suffering; and religiosity or spirituality to help change aggressors' behavior. Conclusion: reference to a divinity emerged as one way of coping with stressful situations, such as the pain and suffering resulting from domestic violence. RESUMENObjetivo: describir cómo las personas mayores usan la religiosidad y la espiritualidad en el enfrentamiento de la violencia doméstica. Método: éste es un estudio descriptivo, con enfoque cualitativo. Se ha puesto en marcha en comisarías de Salvador (BA), entre agosto de 2006 y abril de 2007, por medio de análisis de datos en reportes policiales y en entrevistas semiestructuradas junto a nueve personas mayores víctimas de agresión. Los discursos fueron analizados mediante la técnica de análisis de contenido. Un Comité de Ética en Investigación aprobó el proyecto, mediante el dictamen número 021/2004. Resultados: surgieron dos categorías: la religiosidad o espiritualidad como alivio del sufrimiento y la religiosidad o espiritualidad para cambio de comportamiento del agresor. Conclusión: La referencia a una divinidad se destaca como una forma de enfrentar situaciones estresantes, tal como el dolor y el sufrimiento decurrentes de la violencia doméstica.
