Objective To assess the influence of federal feeding programs on the anthropometric indicators of nutritional status of adolescents from Federal Institutes. Methods Temporal analysis of the anthropometric data of students from the capital of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil (n=250), on admission in 2017 (baseline) and after one year, in 2018 (follow-up). Participation in student assistance programs, sociodemographic, anthropometric, dietary, and physical activity aspects were evaluated. The Split Plot ANOVA test was used to analyze height-for-age and body mass index-for-age as continuous variables (mean of z-score; variation in the mean of z-score between baseline and follow-up). Prevalence Ratio was used to analyze categorical variables: improvement in height-for-age (increase in z-score value between baseline and follow-up); improvement in body mass index-for-age (change in z-score towards zero between baseline and follow-up). Results There was a reduction in the height-for-age z-score (-0.173 to -0.350; p<0.001; eta=0.195), but this decline was smaller in the participants of both programs (from -0.249 to -0.357) compared to those not assisted by both simultaneously (from -0.149 to -0.345) (p=0.041). The improvement in height-for-age was positively associated with longer daily time spent at school and participation in the food program under the National Student Assistance Program. The improvement in body mass index-for-age was negatively associated with sex and positively with the number of people in the household. Conclusion The concomitant participation in the National School Feeding Program and in the National Student Assistance Program had a positive influence on the linear growth of students in situations of socioeconomic vulnerability.

Objective The Federal Institutes of Education, Science, and Technology provide Basic Education and, thus, must execute the National School Feeding Program. The study aimed to characterize school feeding in these institutes, focusing on the purchase of food from family farming. Methods Cross-sectional study with Brazilian Federal Institutes that offer Basic Education courses. The characteristics of purchases from family farming in 2019 were analyzed, as well as the type of management of the school food service, the presence of a nutritionist in the unit acting as technical manager, and the presence of a canteen. Pearson’s chi-square test was used to analyze the association between the variables, adopting a statistical significance level of 5%. Results A total of 171 campuses, distributed in the five Brazilian regions, participated in the study. Among the participants in the survey, 35.1% did not offer any type of food to their students. The percentage of Federal Institutes that carried out acquisitions from family farming was 48%. The presence of a nutritionist was verified in 33.9% of the campuses and associated with food purchases from family farming. The type of food service management was shown to be related to the diversity of the purchases and the main categories of purchased foods. Conclusion The results demonstrate the importance of monitoring the school feeding policy at the federal level, being possible to characterize the school feeding in the Federal Institutes, also showing that more than half of the sample did not make purchases from family farming.

Artigo Original; Alimentação e Nutrição em Saúde Coletiva.Objetivo: Analisar o perfil alimentar e a percepção de escolares sobre a alimentação servida nas escolas, segundo a vulnerabilidade à saúde. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo transversal, realizado com uma amostra representativa de alunos do Ensino Fundamental da Rede Municipal de Belo Horizonte. A vulnerabilidade à saúde foi determinada pelo Índice de Vulnerabilidade à Saúde dos setores censitários das escolas. Foram coletadas informações referentes ao hábito alimentar e à percepção sobre a alimentação escolar. Foi utilizado o Teste Qui-quadrado de Pearson para determinar diferenças segundo o Índice de Vulnerabilidade à Saúde. Resultados: Foram entrevistados 3.557 alunos. Os alunos das escolas com menor vulnerabilidade apresentaram o hábito de comprar alimentos em estabelecimentos próximos à escola (p=0,01); perceberam em menor proporção a alimentação escolar como variada (p<0,001), o tempo para comer como suficiente (p<0,001) e a importância da alimentação escolar (p=0,02). Conclusão: O perfil alimentar e a percepção da alimentação variaram segundo a vulnerabilidade das Escolas. Nas escolas de menor vulnerabilidade, os alunos compraram mais alimentos no entorno e apresentaram menor aceitação e valorização da alimentação escolar. Sugere-se a investigação de fatores associados (socioeconômicos e ambientais) para compreensão das condições que influenciam o adequado fornecimento da alimentação escolar à todos os estudantes.
