Using satellite data to study the relationship between rainfall and diarrheal diseases in a Southwestern Amazon basin

Abstract: The North region is the second region in Brazil with the highest incidence rate of diarrheal diseases in children under 5 years old. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between rainfall and water level during the rainy season principally with the incidence rate of this disease in a southwestern Amazon basin. Rainfall estimates and the water level were correlated and both of them were correlated with the diarrheal incidence rate. For the Alto Acre region, 2 to 3 days’ time-lag is the best … Show more

“…A pilot project was applied to Acre state, in western Brazilian Amazonia, where the visualization tools of such data enabled, in a series of stakeholder consultation workshops, the identification of necessary climate interface analysis to provide inputs for policy‐making. That was particularly the case of two climate‐health analysis, one on temperature and occurrence of dengue fever (Horta et al , ) and another on precipitation, flooding and infant diarrhoea outbreaks (Fonseca et al , ).…”

“…This variable is an indicator for the prediction of trends in the occurrence of this disease in this municipality and in the other municipalities of the Amazon region, as they share similar climatic and environmental features 28 . Graph 3 shows the time series of these variables during the study period.…”

“…Graph 3 shows the time series of these variables during the study period. Outbreaks of diarrhea associated with extreme weather events have occurred worldwide, especially after flooding events and inundations 9,28,[36][37][38][39][40][41] . However, until then, no one knew how much these factors could contribute to the occurrence of infectious diarrheal diseases in this municipality with potential to cause hospitalization.…”

“…As doenças diarreicas infecciosas são doenças agudas, causadas por agentes etiológicos que incluem bactérias, vírus, parasitas e suas toxinas, como é o caso da cólera, da shiguelose, da amebíase e da febre tifoide e paratifoide, entre outras. As manifestações clínicas são bastante variadas e vão desde infecções assintomáticas até casos graves com diarreia profusa FONSECA et al, 2016).…”
