Correlation between patient age at total hip replacement surgery and lifeexpectancy

Abstract: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is one of the most cost-effective hip surgeries among orthopedic procedures. We conducted an extensive literature review with 5,394 papers regarding survival rates after THA. We searched PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane library from January 1st, 1970 to July 31th, 2014 looking for all citations about total hip arthroplasty with a long term follow-up (longer than 10 years). The criteria were rigorous: no loss of follow-up, and follow-up more than 10 years. The authors should have kno… Show more

“…Therefore, it is difficult to speculate about how much of the increased risk of death in patients with Parkinson's disease is the result of the disease itself and related comorbidities rather than undergoing THA. However, given that THA may have a positive correlation with life expectancy in some cohorts [6,19,32], it does not seem likely that this increased risk of death over the longer term could be attributed to the sequelae of THA, when this increased risk is not reflected in the short-term in our study.…”

“…Since Total Hip Replacement was pioneered in the 1960s, its reliability and efficiency have improved [6][7]. Fifteen to twenty years later, this surgical excision procedure had already cemented its position as the top choice for hip pathologists [1,5]. Initially, the procedure faced multiple drawbacks, ranging from surgical infections structural implant failures, and the inability to choose the most appropriate femoral and acetabular implants objectively.…”

“…Recently, implant technology has witnessed remarkable improvements since the revolution-ary work of Wiles [4], Charnley, and other 20 th -century orthopaedic researchers [1]. Prior follow-up and survival studies conducted ten years after the procedure show that the survival of 15 years is currently at 57.6%, at 20 years at 34.6%, while at 25 years, it is only 11.6% [5]. It shows that very few patients survive to 25 years after the procedure.…”

“…In terms of quality of life, THA has proven to be one of the most valuable and cost-effective procedures in modern medicine [5,6]. We know that patients who undergo THA have a higher life expectancy compared to the general population [4,8,9]. Why?…”
