The Challenge to Scavenge IRON from Tailings Produced By FLOTATION A New Approach: The Super-WHIMS & the BigFLUX Magnetic Matrix

Abstract: Tailings recovery has been a constant challenge for most engineers. Along more than five years, GAUSTEC joined major players in the mining Industry to scavenge Iron from tailings produced by flotation making use of WHIMS (Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation). In the early 1980s, in USA, the US 4,192,738 patent was granted with promising results. Despite this, thirty years have passed with no significant application worldwide. One main reason is reported: the market missed a really high feed capacity WHIMS i… Show more

“…The smaller the GAP, the greater the gradient caused by the matrix. Consequently, the increased gradient causes a larger proportion of nonmagnetic particles to be entrained into the concentrate (Ribeiro & Ribeiro, 2013;Ribeiro & Ribeiro, 2017;Pinto & Delboni Júnior, 2019;Rocha et al, 2019). Tests 1 and 7, 2 and 8, 3 and 9, 4 and 10, 5 and 11, and 6 and 12 were performed under the same conditions (feed solids percentage, magnetic field, and washing water pressure), except for the matrix opening, with the former being performed with a GAP of 1.5 mm, showing higher selectivity, and the latter with a GAP of 1.0 mm.…”

“…Castro & Peres (2013) produced pellet feed fines material through a reprocessing route (magnetic concentration and flotation) of tailings disposed in dams. Ribeiro et al (2017) discussed ways of scavenging iron from tailings produced by flotation using WHIMS. For the authors, mining companies should investigate the use of high magnetic fields intensity and matrixes with GAP smaller than 1.5 mm.…”

“…Maximizing profit and minimizing costs are necessary actions, however the main goal is to reduce the environmental impacts. Thus, the reprocessing of tailings is essential (Li et al, 2010;Wolff & Dutra, 2010;Roy & Das, 2013;Jena et al, 2015;Ozcan & Celik, 2016;Mohanty et al, 2017;Ribeiro et al, 2017;Dauce et al, 2019;Rocha et al, 2019). Turning the tailings or part of them into assets has been a great current challenge because there is still a lack of economically viable technologies in the mining industry for the recovery of the material of interest present in the tailings from the processing of iron ore.…”

“…Este sistema permitiu a elevação do campo magnético de 10000 G, para 18000 G, fazendo uso de matrizes com GAP de 1,1 mm. Segundo Ribeiro [1], o sistema super-WHIMS consiste na utilização de calços complementares, que remetem ao uso de matrizes com uma menor largura, concentram mais energia nas bobinas e potencializam o campo magnético.…”
