Species of the genus Pinus are widely cultivated in Brazil, in the south of the country, mainly P. taeda and P. elliottii are responsible for suppling for diverse industrial segments. Although poorly studied, other species from the same region of natural distribution could also possibly present good growth potential. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the development of different dendrometric characteristics of provenances of P. glabra grown in the highlands of south Brazil during 24 years of growth. The values obtained for P. glabra in the studied region was compared with the ones from its natural distribution region and with data of P. taeda in south Brazil. By means of annual dendrometric measurements during almost the entire studied period, especially at age 24 years, the growth and productivity of the species was addressed. All studied provenances shown suitability to the evaluated edaphoclimatic conditions, with initial height growth above 1 m year-1 during the first 5 years. Productivities above 30 m3 ha-1 year-1 at age 24 years, as well as the production of dominant individuals with 30 cm of dbh at age 15 years can be expected. Therefore, the potential for commercial use of P. glabra in the highlands of south Brazil was proven, thus being an interesting alternative to the commonly used species

___________________________________________________________________ RESUMOO objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar sistemas de crescimento e produção existentes na literatura florestal para estimativas do volume futuro em povoamentos de Pinus taeda L. Os dados utilizados neste trabalho foram provenientes de remedições de 104 parcelas permanentes, com formato quadrado de 0,04 ha de área. Foram avaliados quatro sistemas de modelos globais, quatro sistemas de modelagem em classes de diâmetros, um sistema para modelagem de árvores individuais e predições provenientes do SisPinus. Na avaliação, foram utilizadas as estatísticas de erro médio absoluto (E abs ) e relativo (E r ), raiz quadrada do erro médio quadrático (REMQ) e índice de concordância de Willmott (d). Para avaliação da projeção do volume em diferentes classes de idade, as estatísticas de viés e acurácia foram empregadas. Na categoria de modelos globais a equação ajustada por Wolff II foi a mais precisa e acurada, assim como o sistema de Eisfeld para a modelagem em classes de diâmetro. Na modelagem por árvores individuais de Miranda, observaram-se resultados tendenciosos para a estimativa do crescimento em diâmetro e altura, apesar de resultados satisfatórios para a projeção do volume. O simulador SisPinus subestimou o volume em todas as classes de idade. De acordo com os critérios estatísticos avaliados, dentre as categorias de modelos selecionadas, o sistema de equações global apresentado por Wolf II foi o mais preciso, acurado e não tendencioso para estimativa da produção em volume por unidade de área em diferentes classes de idade dos plantios avaliados. PLANTATION IN THE NORTH OF SANTA CATARINA STATEABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate available growth and yield systems in the forest literature for estimating the future volume of Pinus taeda L. stands. The data were obtained from 104 permanent plots, with square format of 0.04 ha of area. They were evaluated four Global Stand Models, four Diameter Distribution Models, one Individual Tree Model and estimates from SisPinus. Nascimento et al (2015) reported a basal area of 52.9 m².ha -1 , a volume of 776 m³.ha -1 for a density of 586 stem ha -1 for 33 to 34-yr-old P. taeda. Background:We analyzed if C. lusitanica can be planted in a shelterwood system with P. taeda as the shelter stratum. The study was conducted in a 13-yr-old C. lusitanica stand under P. taeda canopy in Southern Brazil. Samples of these trees were measured in terms of diameter at breast height (DBH), total height, individual volume, and crown projection area. The species´ growing space efficiency (GSE) was also analyzed. A 10-meters distance criterion from P. taeda trees was applied to check their influence on C. lusitanica growth behavior through correlation. Results:The 36-yr-old P. taeda trees showed expressive means in the dendrometric variables, compatible with its age (mean DBH of 58 cm, total height 30 m, individual volume of 3.7 m³, and crown projection area of 128 m²). There was a statistically significant effect (p>0.05) of P. taeda cover on C. lusitanica diameter (mean of ~13 cm). Although not significant, an effect of P. taeda canopy was also observed on C. lusitanica height. The two species summed a basal area of 36.5 m² ha -1 and a crown projection area of 34,209.2 m² ha -1 . A tendency of increasing GSE with increasing diameter was observed for both species. Conclusion:These results show that a shelterwood with C. lusitanica under P. taeda is possible, but further investigations with longer production cycles and with silvicultural treatments (i.e. thinnings and shelter removal) should be conducted for a better understanding of shelterwood systems with these species in southern Brazil in terms of growth performance and soil use sustainability.
