This study aimed to assess the influence of time and sodium sulfite concentration on tannin yield in Curupay bark and propose better extraction conditions. The extractions were performed using 100 g of dried bark and 1500 mL of water at 70 °C, with extraction times of 2, 3, and 4 h and amount of extractor salt at the concentrations of 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4%. The following parameters were evaluated: content of total solids, total yield of solids, Stiasny index, and gravimetric yield of condensed tannins and non-tannins. Results show that the higher the concentration of sodium sulfite, the higher the content and yield of solids, as well as the higher the extraction of non-tannin compounds. Three-hour extraction time at 3.0% sodium sulfite concentration was the best condition to extract tannins from Curupay bark, under which a condensed tannin yield of 20.46% was obtained.

RESUMO: Espécie vegetal de ampla distribuição geográfica no bioma Caatinga, a Mimosa tenuiflora (Willd.) Poir., vem sendo explorada, principalmente, para produção de energia, apesar de possuir considerável teor de taninos. Com base nisto, no presente estudo analisou-se a produtividade da espécie em relação à produção de casca e seu rendimento em taninos condensados. Para isso utilizou-se árvores adultas que foram selecionadas aleatoriamente na Fazenda NUPEÁRIDO, localizada no município de Patos, PB, Brasil, das quais se removeu a casca desde a base até a porção superior dos galhos. As cascas foram submetidas à secagem, para na sequência serem pesadas, fragmentadas, classificadas e submetidas à extração em autoclave sob diferentes tempos (1, 2 e 3 horas), com posterior quantificação da porção tânica do extrato líquido. Considerando a massa anidra, obteve-se aproximadamente 3,7 kg de casca por árvore. O tempo de extração de 3 horas foi o que apresentou os melhores resultados no rendimento em taninos condensados, atingindo 17,3%. Tais resultados fornecem subsídios efetivos para futuras análises, com relação à rentabilidade em produção e questões econômicas, favorecendo para o emprego industrial da espécie. The bark of Anadenanthera peregrina (L.) Speg and Anadenanthera colubrina (Vell.) Brenan were characterized in relation to anatomical and chemical features. The barks were similar and included a thin conducting phloem, a largely dilated and sclerified non-conducting phloem, and a rhyridome with periderms with thin phellem interspersed by cortical tissues. Only small differences between species were observed that cannot be used alone for taxonomic purposes. The summative chemical composition of A. peregrina and A. colubrina was respectively: 8.2% and 7.7% ash; 28.8% and 29.3% extractives; 2.4% and 2.6% suberin; and 18.9% lignin. The monosaccharide composition showed the predominance of glucose (on average 82% of total neutral sugars) and of xylose (9%). The ethanol-water extracts of A. peregrina and A. colubrina barks included a high content of phenolics, respectively: total phenolics 583 and 682 mg GAE/g extract; 148 and 445 mg CE/g extract; tannins 587 and 98 mg CE/g extract. The antioxidant activity was 238 and 269 mg Trolox/g extract. The barks of the Anadenanthera species are a potential source of polar extractives that will represent an important valorization and therefore contribute to improve the overall economic potential and sustainability of A. peregrina and A. colubrina
