Inserted in the scenario of innovations and technological trends of Industry 4.0, this work aims to obtain detailed knowledge on the influence of idle time between layers as thermal control technique for the Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) with two GMAW process variants of high controllability (CMT and CMT Pulse). The problem focuses on the deposition of thick walls, seeking to emulate the challenges of manufacturing big parts with medium geometric complexity, such as propellers and screws, which usually have sections of this thickness. Although works in the area of additive manufacturing point out the use of idle time as a feature to stabilize the thermal gradient, detailed information about the thermal behavior ends up being omitted. Both processes variants used presented high metallic transference stability and low thermal input when compared to the conventional GMAW, being positive differentials for WAAM. In the tests, walls with eight layers were built with ER309LSi steel in which the interlayer idle time varied from 0 to 300 s. It can be concluded that both processes are WAAM compliant, and that although the CMT Pulse has a higher energy input, the temperature control by idle time was able to control the thermal accumulation in the part for both processes.

New technologies can be justified with the advent of the additive manufacturing, excels by its flexibility in manufacturing parts of various geometries, good accuracy and material waste reduction savings. This circumstance requires the application of techniques to determine the reliability of the results in the deposition of layers in order to have a good accuracy. This work aims to present a new technology applied to additive manufacturing, focusing on accuracy in the deposition of layers, lower cost and user friendliness man-machine. New method was proposed in order to obtain advantages regarding the use of Plasma welding process. An apparatus for generating plasma was used to obtain the arc. Devices to control speed and position were used to determine essential variables in the deposition of layers' process. Correlated magnitudes helped in determining Efficient Model of Deposition for use in offsetting the geometric and thermal errors. Computer simulations were applied to the new concept of deposition and the efficiency of the presented system was performed, but no experimental results are provided herein.

ResumoA manufatura aditiva é um processo utilizado para a construção e reparos de peças que possuem geometria complexa ou que necessitem de gradiente de propriedades. Nessa técnica múltiplas camadas são depositadas para a construção da geometria do componente. O sucesso desse procedimento depende de fatores como a técnica de deposição, parâmetros, liga a ser depositada e condições da deposição, como temperatura e atmosfera protetora. Neste estudo, o potencial da técnica de Plasma por arco transferido para manufatura aditiva foi avaliado produzindo “paredes finas”, construídas a partir da sobreposição de cordões. Foram utilizadas duas ligas a base de níquel, uma endurecida por precipitação e outra endurecida por solução sólida. Durante os trabalhos, foram selecionados os parâmetros de processamentos, incluindo a avaliação do efeito do pré-aquecimento a 300°C. Resultados mostraram que a composição química da liga influencia a geometria da parede construída assim como a utilização de pré-aquecimento. Estruturas de solidificação exibindo dendritas refinadas com crescimento epitaxial entre camadas são identificadas. Entretanto, as características da liga determinam o perfil de dureza ao longo da seção transversal, sendo a liga endurecida por precipitação influenciada pelos ciclos térmicos de deposição e a liga endurecida por solução sólida pela diluição com o substrato. Em qualquer dos casos é recomendado a aplicação de tratamento térmico pós-soldagem para uniformização das propriedades.
