Combined Treatment of Vinasse by an Upflow Anaerobic Filter-Reactor and Ozonation Process

Abstract: -The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficacy of treating vinasse using anaerobic digestion (AD) followed by ozonation. The AD process was performed using a laboratory-scale upflow anaerobic filter reactor (UAFR) under continuous operation at 29 ± 1 °C. Stable conditions were reached at 10 kgCOD m -3 d -1 and a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 5 days. Under these conditions, the efficiency of reduction of the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and the methane yield were 75.1% and 0.315 m 3 CH 4 kgCODr … Show more

“…In percentage, the reduction was 47.0% at 30 min and 76.2% at 120 min Regarding the treatment with different dosages of ozone, there was a reduction of 67.7% at the dosage of 4 mg L -1 of O3 and of 81.5% at the dosage of 17 mg L -1 of O3 ( Figure 5). The greatest color reductions (76.2% and 81.5%), are corroborated by Cabrera-Díaz et al (2016) and Li et al (2015), in which Cabrera-Díaz et al (2016) observed color removals of 93.7% (UPt-Co) in a combined treatment of vinasse (anaerobic filter-reactor and ozonation process) emphasizing the effectiveness of the ozonation process in the color and turbidity removal of this residue. Li et al (2015), on the other hand, using biofiltration and ozonation for effluent treatment, observed a general efficiency for color removal of 70.0%, similar to the one obtained in the present study.…”

“…Color changes under the influence of ozone exposure were also observed. During the first hour of ozonation, ozone reduced vinasse color by 87% [41]. The changes were less pronounced in non-ozonized wine.…”
