Continuous catalyst-free production of esters from Jatropha curcas L. oil under supercritical ethanol

Abstract: -In the present study, the transesterification of Jatropha oil in a continuous catalyst-free process using supercritical ethanol was investigated. Experiments were performed in a packed-bed tubular reactor by studying the effect on the reaction of temperature, pressure, water and cosolvent (n-hexane) concentrations, keeping the oil:ethanol mass ratio fixed at 1:1 for different residence times. The results demonstrated that temperature and pressure had a positive effect on fatty acid ethyl ester (FAEE) producti… Show more

“…A tubular reactor with a fixed bed was used to conduct the reactions with mixture containing CSO and MA (obtained from the low pressure extraction, Figure 1a), as shown in Figure 1b. [ 43–46 ] This mixture was kept under constant stirring and then directed to the reaction system, with the aid of a high pressure liquid pump. The reactions were conducted with the operating temperature ranging from 300 to 375 °C, monitored with thermocouples.…”

“…In relation to the system pressure, this variable can positively affect the yield, mainly due to the influence on the density and the viscosity of the fluid near the critical point. This effect generally provides increases in yield values in esters …”

“…Other authors also investigate the use of continuous reactors, and the effect of temperature on the reaction yield is more evident . Silva et al reported in their study that the effect of temperature is more pronounced in the early reaction times.…”
