Effect of moringa and bagasse ash filler particles on basalt/epoxy composites

Abstract: ObstractThis study evaluated the effect of moringa and nano ash filler particles on mechanical, chemical corrosion and moisture absorption of basalt fiber/epoxy composites. Epoxy resin and Araldite HY951 hardener was used as matrix along with the inclusion of filler particles while the bi-directional woven basalt fiber mat was used as the reinforcement in fabricating composites using hand layup technique. Three different composites i.e. Plain BF + matrix with no filler particles, BF + matrix with 10 wt, % mori… Show more

“…Sampath et al [16] have concluded that inclusion of nano-fillers increases the mechanical properties of the composites by strengthening the matrix yield strength. Karaduman et al [17] have investigated the effect of stacking sequence on chemically treated flax/jute fibre reinforced hybrid composites by means of tensile and flexural tests.…”

“…Other natural fillers, such as moringa ash (at 10 wt.%) and bagasse ash (at 10 wt.%) particles, were applied to modify the epoxy matrix in basalt fiber-reinforced composites BF. Bi-directional woven basalt fiber mat was used as reinforcement [107]. The mechanical properties and chemical corrosion resistance of three types of composites were evaluated.…”

“…Li et al [ 13 ] examined the epoxy/basalt fiber laminates with the incorporation of 2D montmorillonite (MMT), 0D nanoSiO 2 and combined 2D MMT/0D nanoSiO 2 attained efficiently increased in ILSS and notch impact strength compared with plain epoxy/basalt fiber composites, the highest improvement in the incorporated composite of 2D MMT/0D nanoSiO 2 proved experimentally and had unique microstructure phase by scanning electron microscope (SEM) results. The mechanical behavior of aluminum and basalt fiber epoxy FMLs composite in addition with modified NC of 1, 3, and 5 wt% experimental results showed that the Charpy impact absorbed the highest energy in 3 wt% NC content and decreased in ILSS due to the cluster of NC particles studied by Bahari‐Sambran et al [ 14 ] Sampath and Santhanam [ 15 ] evaluated the effect of moringa and bagasse ash filler particles added in epoxy/basalt composites exhibits better mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and water absorption resulting in moringa/basalt‐epoxy composites. Kim et al [ 16 ] assessed the mechanical and thermal properties of natural graphite flakes filled basalt fiber reinforced epoxy composites, the results show that 20 wt% of filler occurred an optimal performance of critical stress intensity factor, critical strain energy release rate, high thermal stability, and conductivity enhanced significantly, also, the improvement in the properties due to crack pinning role mechanism performed in epoxy resin.…”
