Beliefs related to adherence to oral antidiabetic treatment according to the Theory of Planned Behavior

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: to identify salient behavioral, normative, control and self-efficacy beliefs related to the behavior of adherence to oral antidiabetic agents, using the Theory of Planned Behavior. METHOD: cross-sectional, exploratory study with 17 diabetic patients in chronic use of oral antidiabetic medication and in outpatient follow-up. “…The definition of the targeted behaviour was expressed as “ Taking the medications for the treatment of diabetes as prescribed by the physician, which means taking them every day, at the time and in the quantity indicated, remembering to be careful to take some before or after meals, fasting and/or when going to bed” ( Jannuzzi, Rodrigues, Cornélio, São‐João, & Gallani, ) . Then, participants were asked to answer the following question: “ In the last two months, I have taken the medications for treatment of diabetes exactly as prescribed by my physician,” on a four‐point Likert‐type scale: (a) rarely or never; (b) some days of the week; (c) most days of the week; and (d) every day or practically every day.…”
