Objective: Understanding the conceptions of premature children caregivers on child development and associated factors. Method: An exploratory-descriptive qualitative study of 12 families with children under three years of age. Interviews were submitted to thematic content analysis, systematized into the categories of Bioecological Theory of Human Development: Process, Person, Context and Time, and in the Functional Development category. Results: There are concerns about impairment in the current and future development of a Person/child defined as fragile as a result of premature birth (Time dimension), minimized by the scope of observable competencies such as motor skills. The Context, especially family and health services, and Proximal Processes, described as one-way caregiver interactions, are considered determinants of development. Functional Development is considered a natural consequence and result of education. The support network is crucial, supporting or limiting care. Conclusion: Concerns about the development mobilize caregivers to stimulate the premature child/person and requests family and healthcare assistance.

Objective: to analyze the process of empowerment of the mothers of children hospitalized in a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) according to Cheryl H. Gibson's framework. Method: a qualitative study with a non-directive interview in groups was carried out with 14 mothers in the PICU of a pediatric teaching hospital in the state of Rio de Janeiro, whose data were submitted to thematic analysis. Results: all mothers underwent at least one phase of the process of empowerment. Some of them achieved the phase of participatory competence in the care for their children, being heard by the team and expressing their needs, opinions, and questions. Final considerations: attentive listening and information sharing with mothers is necessary, in order to provide essential support so that they undergo the process of empowerment, thus involving themselves in care and decision-making regarding their children. Método: pesquisa qualitativa, com entrevista não diretiva, em grupo, de 14 mães de uma UTIP de um hospital universitário pediátrico do Rio de Janeiro, cujos dados foram submetidos à análise temática. Resultados: todas as mães passaram por, pelo menos, uma fase do processo de empoderamento. Parte delas atingiu a fase da competência participativa no cuidado ao fi lho, sendo ouvida pela equipe e manifestando suas necessidades, opiniões e questionamentos. Considerações fi nais: é necessário escuta atenta e compartilhamento de informações com as mães, de modo a proporcionar os subsídios essenciais para que passem pelo processo de empoderamento e, assim, envolvam-se nos cuidados e nas tomadas de decisão relacionadas a seus fi lhos. Resultados: todas las madres pasaron, por, al menos, una fase del proceso de empoderamiento. Parte de ellas alcanzó la fase de la competencia participativa en el cuidado del niño, siendo oídas por el equipo y manifestando necesidades, opiniones y cuestionamientos. Consideraciones fi nales: es necesario escuchar atentamente y compartir la información con las madres, de manera de brindar las ayudas esenciales para que pasen por el proceso de empoderamiento y, así, involucrarse en la atención y en las tomas de decisiones relacionadas con sus hijos.

. RESUMO: Objetivo: verificar a percepção dos pais e/ou responsáveis legais de crianças hospitalizadas sobre a atividade do brincar como uma dimensão do cuidado de Enfermagem. Método: estudo qualitativo, descritivo, exploratório e prospectivo, baseado na análise categorial temática. Realizou-se entrevista semiestruturada em um Hospital Infantil de referência do Amazonas, no mês janeiro de 2016. Participaram 22 pais com idade entre 18 e 50 anos. Da análise, emergiram as categoriais temáticas "Significado da brincadeira e brincar", "Importância do brinquedo durante a prática do brincar para a criança hospitalizada" e "O cuidar brincando". Resultados: os pais reconheceram a importância do brincar durante o processo de cuidar em ambiente pediátrico, mas não visualizaram a atividade inserida no plano de cuidado dos profissionais de modo que a singularidade da criança seja respeitada em sua integralidade nesse sentido. Conclusão: há a necessidade de capacitar e sensibilizar os profissionais para utilizar o brincar em sua prática assistencial. THE PARENTS' KNOWLEDGE ON THE CARE PROCESS THROUGH PLAYABSTRACT: Objective: verify how the parents and/or legal caregivers of hospitalized children perceive playing as a dimension of Nursing care. Method: qualitative, descriptive, exploratory and prospective study, using theme/category-based analysis. A semistructured interview was held at a Children's Hospital of reference in the State of Amazonas in January 2016. The participants were 22 parents between 18 and 50 years of age. The thematic categories "Meaning of play and playing", "Importance of the toy during playing practice for hospitalized children" and "Care while playing" emerged from the analysis. Results: the parents acknowledged the importance of playing during the care process in pediatric contexts, but did not envisage the activity as part of the professionals' care plan, so that the child's singularity can be fully respected in that sense. Conclusion: the professionals need qualification and awareness raising to use play in their care practice. DESCRIPTORS: Nursing; Family; Child, hospitalized; Play Therapy; Child Care.
