The Evolutionary Characteristics of Apple Production Layout in China from 1978 to 2016

Abstract: Based on the apple acreage and output data of 23 provinces in China, the LMDI decomposition method and the barycenter analysis model were used to systematically analyze the spatiotemporal characteristics of apple production in China from 1978 to 2016. The results showed that the apple acreage and output continued to increase, and the apple production layout has moved to south-westward; Shaanxi, Shandong, Henan, Shanxi, Gansu, Hebei, Liaoning, and Xinjiang were the main contributors to the apple output increase… Show more

“…The results demonstrated that farmers with better orchard topography and orchard fertility had a strong willingness to transfer apple orchard to their descendants, which may be due to the influence of climate change. The apple eugenic areas in China move to high altitude areas, and the trend of apple production layout "moving westward and expanding northward" is obvious (ZHANG et al, 2021;ZHANG et al, 2018). The improvement of apple quality and benefit brought by the location advantage of orchards located in non-plain areas encourages farmers to manage apple orchards and transmit them from generation to generation.…”

“…China’s apple production areas are mainly concentrated in the four major producing areas of the Bohai Bay region, the Loess Plateau in the northwest, the Old Road of the Yellow River, and the Cold and Cool Highlands in the southwest. Shaanxi, Shandong, Hebei, Shanxi, Liaoning, Henan, and Gansu Provinces are the seven major apple-producing provinces in China [ 3 ]. Based on their parents, apple cultivars in China could be classified into 4 cultivars, including cv.…”

“…A large amount of literature has emerged on studying spatial layout variation of food crops [12][13][14][15]. In the context of cash crops, the main emphasis is given to analyzing the production layout changes in the apple [16,17] and cotton commodities [18]. In the context of the spatial layout of the vegetable industry, Bao et al [19] revealed that comparative advantage, non-farm employment opportunities, transportation conditions, and urbanization level are the main reasons affecting the layout of the vegetable industry.…”
