“…This is an important point of connection with the “theory of secularization,” in which the Protestant Reformation occupies a prominent position, because what we see here is a process of modernization internal to Catholicism. Dullo (2013) argued that this modernization led progressive Catholic priests and laypeople to attempt to promote an organized civil society based on the theological premises of oppression and liberation, but failed to instil religious values as planned. The unplanned result was the formation of an experience of secularity that has Catholicism as its model but does not identify with it.…”

“…The literature shows that the Brazilian case offers a singular process of the “formation of the secular.” Differently from other Catholic countries, Brazil went through a process of modernization throughout the 20th century that did not occur in opposition to religion; quite the opposite, there was a religious modernity. As Giumbelli (2008) demonstrated, Brazil experienced a version of modernity in which the religious absorbed the civic; and Dullo (2013) pointed out that the formation of secularity took place not only within a Catholic paradigm but as an unintended consequence of Catholic attempts to absorb the civic. With this, we can argue that the literature demonstrates a unique socio‐historical configuration in which secularity was formed against the grain, despite religious efforts to avoid it.…”
