Cytotoxicity Evaluation of Two Bis-Acryl Composite Resins Using Human Gingival Fibroblasts

Abstract: Bis-acryl resins are used for temporary dental restorations and have shown advantages over other materials. The aim of this work was to evaluate the in vitro cytotoxicity of two bis-acryl composite resins (Protemp 4 and Luxatemp Star), obtained at 1, 7 and 40 days after mixing the resin components, using a standardized assay employing human primary cells closely related to oral tissues. Human gingival fibroblast cell cultures were exposed for 24 h to either bis-acryl composite resins, polystyrene beads (negati… Show more

“…Similar to this result, Gonçalves et al investigated cytotoxicity of two bis‐acryl composite resins (Protemp 4, Luxatemp Star) using human gingival fibroblasts. Their study proved that these materials have no cytotoxic effects on human gingival fibroblasts . These findings agree with the results of this study.…”

“…The complex interactions between provisional prosthetic materials and soft oral tissues, namely, the gingival epithelium and oral mucosa, represent extremely important aspects in maintaining a favorable equilibrium of the oral environment. The health of the gingiva located near a provisional crown is influenced by several factors, among which, the material’s characteristics/properties are of utmost importance [ 5 , 18 , 19 , 20 ].…”

“…In this regard, recent studies have offered suggestions on how to simulate this process, to some extent, including the continuous washing of test material during longer extraction times. 28 Therefore, it is possible that the reduction in cell metabolism induced by Biodentine at 42 days, detected in the present study by the XTT assay, might be related to an overestimation induced by the restrictive culture conditions of the assay.…”
