Acid Etching and Surface Coating of Glass-Fiber Posts: Bond Strength and Interface Analysis

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate the bond strength of a composite resin to glass-fiber post (GFP) treated or not with phosphoric acid, silane coupling agent, and unfilled resin. GFPs were etched or not with 37% phosphoric acid and different surface coating applied: silane coupling agent, unfilled resin, or both. Composite resin blocks were built around a 4-mm height on the GFP. Unfilled resin (20 s) and composite resin (40 s) were light activated by a light-emitting diode unit. The specimens were stored i… Show more

“…A limitation of the methodology used in the present study is that the treatments were carried out over ground surfaces of GFPs, a procedure that has been carried out in other studies (Oliveira et al 2011, 2013, Gonc ßalves et al 2013, Cecchin et al 2016). This procedure was performed to obtain a flat surface and allow the contact angle readings as well as the bond strength measurements.…”

“…When silane is used alone, it can form a non-homogeneous layer on the post surface. When used in combination with an adhesive layer, both materials can infiltrate the post surface and reinforce the bond with resin cement 34 . The use of heat-treated silane on the post surfaces is less common than its use to treat feldpsathic or glass ceramics before cementation.…”
