Abiotic environmental conditions for germination and development of gametophytes of Cyathea phalerata Mart. (Cyatheaceae)

Abstract: In order to successfully establish themselves in their natural environment, ferns need habitats with abiotic conditions that are suitable for spore germination and gametophyte development. Th e objective of this study was to assess the infl uence of abiotic factors on the initial development of Cyathea phalerata cultivated in vitro. Spore germination and gametophyte development were assessed under varying conditions of surface sterilization, pH, temperature and photoperiod. Exogenous contamination was eliminat… Show more

“…As shown in studies of bean (Thomson et al, 1993), corn (Blevins et al 1977), peach (Tagliavini et al, 1995), and natural temperate ecosystems (Van Miegroet and Cole, 1984) nitrogen fertilizers decrease soil pH. Acidic substrates (pH 4-5), in turn, have been shown to favor spore germination and the development of gametophytes in several tree fern species (Marcon et al, 2017, Medeiros et al, 2017, Rechenmacher et al 2010. It is possible then that soil acidification following the fertilization of pineapple fields in the Manu region allow tree ferns to recruit more competitively than pioneer arborescent angiosperms such as Cecropia and Jacaranda.…”

“…Gametofit Cyathea phalerata berkembang lebih cepat pada media dengan pH asam, dan menghasilkan gametofit paling banyak pada fotoperiode 6 dan 18 jam (Marcon et al 2017). Perkecambahan spora dan perkembangan gametofit dari Asplenium nidus (Praptosuwiryo 2010), Cibotium barometz , dan Platycerum wandae (Praptosuwiryo 2017) terjadi dengan baik pada media campuran akar Cyathea contaminants arang sekam padi.…”

“…The species is widely distributed in Brazil, occurring in all regions (Windisch and Santiago, 2015), and also in Bolivia (Lehnert, 2006). Information on C. phalerata is still limited and practically restricted to taxonomy (Fernandes 2003), pharmacology (Hort et al, 2008), and germination and gametophyte development (Marcon et al, 2017). Due to the drastic reduction of the Atlantic Forest (SOS Mata Atlântica, 2020), and having only been registered between latitudes 29°17' -31°00'S (Gonzatti et al, 2016), C. phalerata is considered Critically Endangered by the list of endangered species of flora of the state of Rio Grande do Sul (Rio Grande do Sul, 2014).…”
