Objective: To know the maternal perception about early stimulation and its repercussion in the development of the child with microcephaly associated with zika virus. Method: A qualitative study was carried out from June to August 2017 with five mothers of children diagnosed with microcephaly associated with zika virus. The data were collected through individual interviews with semi-structured script and evaluated by the content analysis, in its thematic modality. Results: Mothers recognized the benefits and the advances in the development of the child after the beginning of the early stimulation. It is noteworthy that the difficulty of transportation was the main reason for the lack of attendance at consultations, and that the short time of stimulation was the main weakness of the service. Final considerations: The recognition of maternal perception and the difficulties and weaknesses of the service can contribute to the elaboration of public policies and the planning of holistic care for children with microcephaly and their families. RESUMOObjetivo: Conhecer a percepção materna acerca da estimulação precoce e sua repercussão no desenvolvimento da criança com microcefalia associada ao zika vírus. Método: Estudo qualitativo, realizado de junho a agosto de 2017 com cinco mães de crianças diagnosticadas com microcefalia associada ao zika vírus. Os dados foram coletados por meio de entrevistas individuais com roteiro semiestruturado e avaliados pela análise de conteúdo, em sua modalidade temática. Resultados: Verificou-se que as mães reconheceram os benefícios e os avanços no desenvolvimento da criança após o início da estimulação precoce. Ressalta-se que a dificuldade de transporte foi o principal motivo para a falta de assiduidade nas consultas, e que o curto tempo de estimulação consistiu na principal fragilidade do serviço. Considerações finais: O reconhecimento da percepção materna e das dificuldades e fragilidades do serviço podem contribuir na elaboração de políticas públicas e no planejamento da assistência holística à criança com microcefalia e sua família. No Brasil, houve aumento no número de casos de microcefalia detectados em crianças nascidas no segundo semestre de 2015. Esses casos tiveram incremento significativo no país. Em 2014, foram 162 ocorrências, aumentando, em 2015, para 1.608. Essa condição está associada a vários acometimentos nas funções do organismo, levando a limitações no desenvolvimento infantil. Esta pesquisa objetiva analisar a dinâmica familiar de criança com a síndrome congênita associada ao Zika vírus (SCZV) no Município de Petrolina, Pernambuco. Como instrumento de coleta, utilizou-se a consulta ao prontuário e a realização de entrevista por meio de roteiro semiestruturado. Empregou-se abordagem quali-quantitativa, envolvendo a totalidade das mães e dos familiares que acompanhavam as crianças com a SCZV na unidade de saúde de referência, AME Amália Granja Alencar. Na análise dos discursos, aplicou-se a técnica de análise de conteúdo. Os resultados relacionados à categoria mudanças da vida diária de familiares de criança com a SCZV foram agrupados em três subcategorias: atividade da vida diária (AVD); impactos financeiros e no trabalho associados à descoberta da SCZV; e mudança na relação conjugal após a descoberta da SCZV. A pesquisa demonstrou majoritariamente que o cuidado da criança com SCZV está centrado na figura feminina e que o diagnóstico traz significativas mudanças na dinâmica familiar, como maior dependência da criança ao cuidador, aumento de gastos financeiros e absenteísmo no trabalho.

Social science generates evidence necessary to control epidemics. It can help to craft appropriate public health responses, develop solutions to the epidemic impacts and improve understanding of why the epidemic occurred. Yet, there are practical constraints in undertaking this international research in a way that produces quality, ethical and appropriate data, and that values all voices and experiences, especially those of local researchers and research participants. In this paper, we reflected on the experience of undertaking social science research during the 2015/2016 Zika epidemic in Brazil. This experience was considered from the perspective of this paper’s authors: three Brazilian academics, two UK academics and two mothers of children affected by congenital Zika syndrome. This group came together through the conduct of the Social and Economic Impact of Zika study, a mixed-methods social science study. The key findings highlight practical issues in the achievement of three goals: the conduct of high-quality social science in emergencies and efforts towards the decolonisation of global health in terms of levelling the power between Brazilian and UK researchers and optimising the role of patients within research. From our perspective, the information collected through social science was valuable, providing detailed insight into the programmatic needs of mothers and their affected children (eg, economic and social support and mental health services). Social science was considered a low priority within the Zika epidemic despite its potential importance. There were logistical challenges in conducting social science research, foremost of which are the difficulties in developing a trusting and balanced power relationship between the UK and Brazilian researchers in a short time frame. When these issues were overcome, each partner brought unique qualities, making the research stronger. The mothers of affected children expressed dissatisfaction with research, as they were involved in many studies which were not coordinated, and from which they did not see a benefit. In conclusion, the importance of social science in epidemics must continue to be promoted by funders. Funders can also set in place mechanisms to help equalise the power dynamics between foreign and local researchers, researchers and participants, both to promote justice and to create best quality data.
