Prevalence of corrected arterial hypertension based on the self-reported prevalence estimated by the Brazilian National Health Survey

Abstract: The objective was to correct the self-reported prevalence of systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) obtained from the Brazilian National Health Survey (PNS 2013). SAH prevalence estimates were corrected by means of sensitivity/specificity of information. Sensitivity and specificity values from a similar study (same self-report question, age range and gold standard) were used to this end. A sensitivity analysis was also performed, by using the upper and lower limits of confidence intervals as sensitivity and spec… Show more

“…33 After adjustment for age and sex and corrected by sensitivity and specificity values of a selfreport, SAH prevalence is estimated at 14.5% in the general population (19.5% among men and 11.8% among women). 34 Prevalence of SAH among the Brazilian age group 40 to 59 years is 13% (95% CI: 11.3-14.7%), 20.6% among men, and 9.3% among women. 34 Although the exact SAH prevalence in the general population of the cities involved in the outbreak is unknown, the high prevalence of SAH found among the re-examined patients was more than twice that found in a control group matched by sex and age for the same patients reported 10 years after the outbreak.…”

“…Estima-se que até 2050 seis países de renda média, entre eles o Brasil, apresentarão mudanças demográficas importantes, com aumento considerável do número de adultos que necessitarão de tratamento para doenças crônicas 3 . No Brasil, a prevalência estimada da HAS corrigida pelos dados autorreferidos da Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde em 2013, foi de 14,5% 4 .…”
