Mean platelet volume and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio decrease in patients with depression with antidepressant treatment

Abstract: Objective: Not only white blood cells but also platelets are being considered in inflammatory reactions from now on. Mean platelet volume (MPV) and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (NLR) have been shown to change in inflammatory diseases like myocardial infarction, stroke and implicated in psychiatric disorders nowadays. Our first aim is to investigate the relation of MPV and NLR with depression and secondly to assess if they change with the treatment of depression. Methods: Forty-nine patients diagnosed with ma… Show more

“…The eighteen studies ( 17 , 35 , 37 , 38 , 41 , 42 , 46 49 , 52 56 , 102 ) selected in this meta-analysis were published between 2015 and 2021, and consisted of 2,264 depression cases and 2,415 controls. As displayed in Table 1 , we summarized the main characteristics of these studies.…”

“…Similarly, other studies reported higher NLR in suicide attempters than individuals without suicidal behaviour [ 63 , 66 ]. Conversely, there is evidence that antidepressants treatment might influence inflammatory processes by affecting proliferation of lymphocyte, hence decreasing NRL [ 67 , 68 ]. In addition, the finding of a lower NLR in TRD versus non-TRD patients is consistent with data reported by our group on a different sample showing that lower NLR levels are associated with violent suicide attempts [ 13 ].…”

“…These results support the presence of a subclinical inflammation dependent on the severity of major depression. Studies examining inflammation in the pathophysiology of major depression suggest that antidepressants tend to reduce inflammation [9,10]. What role does ECT play in inflammation, used in particular in the treatment of resistant and severe depression?…”

“…Hamilton Depression Rating Scale: The Hamilton depression rating scale is used to measure the severity of depression. The score ranges of the scale (0-7) represent no depression; (8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16) mild depression; (17-23) moderate depression; (≥24) and severe depression [13]. A 50% decrease in the HamD scale equates to response to [14] treatment.…”
