Laparoscopy & robotics: a historical parallel

Abstract: The evolution of robotic platforms has brought up ethical, economic, educational, and clinical applicability issues that refer to the early 1990s, when laparoscopy began its dissemination as a technology that would revolutionize surgery. Introduced in Brazil since 1990, laparoscopy has received a lot of resistance from different sectors, including the medical academy itself. The technique was considered expensive, complex, poorly available and with limited clinical applications. However, in a short time, it wa… Show more

“…Laparoscopy allows for a more open view of the organization of anatomical structures, which facilitates the exposure of blood vessels deep in the occluded fossa, clearly excises the lymph nodes in the area, and avoids extensive damage to blood vessels deep in the occluded fossa. In addition, the construction of the pneumoperitoneum can effectively increase abdominal pressure and avoid damage to small blood vessels [15][16][17][18]. Accordingly, laparoscopic surgery was adopted in the present study.…”

“…Past laparotomy patients have shown many complications such as high postoperative pain, decrease in ambulation, and increase in hospital stay due to slow wound healing. Recently, laparoscopic surgery has been popularized due to factors such as development of laparoscopic instruments such as automatic linear stapler and 3D-camera and improvement of surgical skills [ 16 , 17 ]. In addition, since the most common purposes of laparoscopic small intestine surgery are to determine the location of the lesion and to confirm additional lesions in the abdominal cavity, conventional multiport surgery as well as single-port laparoscopic surgery are possible [ [16] , [17] , [18] ].…”
