Substrate, Lime, Phosphorus and Topdress Fertilization in Macaw Palm Seedling Production

Abstract: ABSTRACT-The macaw palm [Acrocomia aculeata (Jacq.) Lood. ex Mart] has been domesticated to subsidize biodiesel production programs in Brazil. However, little is known about the seedling production of this species. This study aimed to evaluate substrate mixtures, limestone and phosphorus rates for substrate amendment and topdressing frequency in macaw palm seedlings. Three trials were conducted in a greenhouse up to six months of nurserycultivation. Trial 1: determination of percent mineral and organic fractio… Show more

“…The higher LA displayed during the initial growth of macaw palm seedling under the low light environment and its maximum photochemical efficiency, contribute to maximizing the light capture. However, during the transition from the pre-nursery stage to nursery-growing plants, with higher biomass accumulation 22 , the increase in the LA was similar between plants grown under contrasting light conditions, resulting in insignificant differences in the SLA. Generally, in dicot trees, shading increases the leaf height and LA compared to plants grown under full sunlight conditions 8 , 10 .…”

“…The recommended initial seedling cultivation process consists of using pre-germinated seeds in two consecutive stages: the pre-nursery stage, which extends from pre-germination to the appearance of the first pair of lanceolate (split) leaves and the nursery stage that extends to the appearance of the second pair of pinnate (mature) leaves. Starting from this point when the seedlings are approximately 1 year old, field planting can begin 22 . Generally, after the formation of the first eophyll in the pre-nursery stage, a hardening procedure is empirically used to promote the robustness of seedlings and enhance their capacity to acclimate to excessive light, thereby preventing photoinhibitory stress in the nursery and hastening development in the field 23 .…”

The search for viable alternatives for replacing fossil fuels by biodiesel is a growing concern, especially in relation to global climate change (Pimentel et al, 2016). “…Knowledge about the availability of light (shading) and about the type of substrate for the production of these seedlings is essential, since they play a prominent role in all stages of plant development in the nursery phase. In addition, they are factors that can be manipulated in order to unequivocally contribute to the improvement of the percentage, speed, and uniformity of emergence, providing more homogeneous seedlings, of good quality, fast growth and with good root system formation (Pimentel et al, 2016). Therefore, knowledge of substrates and shading is a critical step in the production of seedlings of any plant species.…”
