Antifungal activity of cultivated oyster mushrooms on various agro-wastes

Abstract: This study evaluated the antifungal activity of four fruiting bodies of oyster mushroom harvested from three agro-substrates in vitro. At three concentrations (2, 4 and 8 mg/disc), extracts discs of Pleurotus ostreatus (grey), P. ostreatus var. florida, P. cornucopiae var. citrinopileatus and P. salmoneostramineus were tested against three fungal pathogens: Trichoderma harzianum (after 2 days), Verticillium sp. and Pythium sp. (after 5 days) via the Disc Diffusion Method. The highest overall activity was by th… Show more

“…Pleurotus ostreatus is source for trace elements (4), vitamins, essential amino acids (5) and low caloric level (6). P. ostreatus has high medicinal activities such as antiviruses, anti-inflammatory (7), anticancer (8), antioxidant (9), anti-parasitic (10), antibacterial (11) and antifungal activities (12).…”

“…Oyster mushroom produce secondary metabolites which was important against pathogenic fungi 14 .These metabolites include triterpenoides, polysaccharides, proteins and enzymes 15 (Patel, et al 2012). Also, the ability of oyster mushroom to produce metabolic materials such as enzymes give it inhibition force toward decay cellular walls of pathogenic fungi 16 .…”

“…Pleurotus salmoneostramineus had the maximum inhibitory activity of 55.56 percent against Verticillium sp., while P. ostreatus mycelia had the lowest percent inhibition against T. harzianum of 46.15 percent. Owaid et al (2017a) tested the antifungal efficacy of four oyster mushroom fruiting bodies taken from different agro-substrates. The extract of Pleurotus cornucopiae had the highest overall activity, while the lowest was found when cultivated on wheat straw.…”
