Fremont - Iac 543: Tangerine With Potential for the Brazilian Market

Abstract: -Planting new types of tangerines is an interesting alternative for Brazilian citrus growers due to the increasing domestic market. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate a less exploited variety of tangerine, the Fremont. The physics and chemical quality of the fruit and juice (mass, peel color, juice yield, acidity, soluble solids and maturation index) was evaluated, followed by sensory testing for ranking of difference and preference to Nules clementine and Ponkan tangerine varieties. The Fremont tange… Show more

“…In this study, the number of seeds per fruit ranged from 12 up to 28 seeds per fruit, for those from trees on “Fepagro C-13” and “Cleopatra” respectively ( Table 3 ). The number of seeds per fruit found in our study is similar or even fewer than those reported in distinct mandarins and hybrids, including “Cravo,” “Nules,” and “Murcott” tangor ( Pio et al, 2005 ; Pacheco et al, 2017 ). Fruits from the trees on “Fepagro C-13” citrange showed the lowest number of seeds per fruit on most evaluations ( Table 3 ).…”

“…], grafted mostly on “Rangpur” lime ( C. limonia Osb. ), are the most extensively used combinations in Brazil, representing 80% of the total mandarin acreage ( Stuchi et al, 2008 ; Pacheco et al, 2017 ). Although preferred by the Brazilian consumers, the commercialization of “Ponkan” is restricted due to its short postharvest life ( Carvalho S. A. et al, 2019 ).…”

“…These findings agree with those observed by Tazima et al (2013Tazima et al ( , 2014 for fruit quality of 'Oktisu' satsuma mandarin grafted on nine rootstocks at two locations in the Northern region of Paraná, Brazil. These authors reported adequate FW in both experiments, similar to the study of Fallahi and Rodney (1992) on fruits of 'Fairchild' mandarin trees grafted on six rootstocks, and that of Pacheco et al (2017) on fruits of 'Fremont' mandarin trees grafted on 'Rangpur' lime.…”
