Citrus tristeza disease severity and agronomic performance of ‘Pêra’ sweet orange cultivars and selections in the North and Northwest regions of the State of Paraná, Brazil

Abstract: ‘Pêra’ sweet orange is the most important citrus cultivar in Brazil, but it is highly susceptible to Citrus tristeza virus (CTV), the causal agent of citrus tristeza disease. In this study, we evaluated the severity of citrus tristeza disease and its relation with the agronomic performance of seven cultivars and six selections of ‘Pêra’ sweet orange under field conditions in the North and Northwest regions of the State of Paraná, Brazil. The citrus tristeza disease severity was determined based on symptoms of … Show more

“…The productive efficiency presented in Table 4 of the best rootstocks was higher compared to sweet orange on different rootstocks (Azevedo, Rosseto, Schinor, Martelli, & Pacheco, 2012;Brugnara & Andrade, 2019;Giampani, Tazima, Baba, Yada, & Leite Júnior, 2016;Rodrigues et al, 2019) and also compared to Tahiti acid lime on various rootstocks by Rodrigues et al (2018). This was similar to the performance presented by Costa et al (2021), who worked on orange trees with different rootstocks.…”

“…In our studies, stem pitting symptoms were more severe in trees exposed to colder conditions. These conditions may favor viral replication and symptoms expression (Dodds et al 1987;Koller and Soprano 1998;Carvalho et al 1997;Salibe et al 2002;Giampani et al 2016).…”

“…A population of genetically related variants of the virus is likely to be involved in CTV infections (Ayllón et al 1999;Kong et al 2000;Rubio et al 2001). Furthermore, the development of citrus tristeza symptoms depends on the rootstockscion combination, aggressiveness of the CTV complex, and environmental conditions, particularly temperature (Bennett and Costa 1949;Carvalho et al 1997;Salibe et al 2002;Giampani et al 2016).…”
