Spread of Phlebotominae in temperate climates: province of Córdoba, Argentina

Abstract: We report the presence of the competent vector for Leishmaniaspp, Migonemyia migonei, and theEvandromyia cortelezzii-sallesi complex south of its known distribution in the central temperate region of Argentina, in the province of Córdoba. The persistence of this phlebotomine in the northern border of the province, its association with a case of cutaneous leishmaniasis, and the new record in the outskirts of the city of Córdoba, the second most populated in the country, strengthens the need for regular vector s… Show more

“…The same displacement of competent sand flies was also reported in the southern hemisphere, from north to south Argentina due to an increase of temperatures in more temperate regions of this country. This displacement was associated with new local cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis cases in the outskirts of the very populated city of Cordoba [74]. Consequently, the risk of extending the current transmission area of this disease in Argentina is very serious, and can be link to the climate change.…”

“…cortelezzii and Ev. sallesi extend to the center of the country, in Cordoba Province (Visintin et al 2016), suggesting that the Cortelezzii complex has a broader thermotolerance permitting colonization of southern provinces, while the Corumbaensis complex is restricted to the warmer environments in the north of the country. Further projects may focus on the phylogenetic status of this species group, supporting or disproving these morphological findings.…”

“…migonei and Cortelezzii complex in the Dry Chaco (Szelag et al ., 2017). Nyssomyia neivai together with species of the Cortelezzii series are the taxa most widely distributed in Argentina, although the records of abundance for the former are usually higher than those of the latter (Salomón et al ., 2008; Visintin et al ., 2016; Szelag et al ., 2018).…”
