Considerations on the Species Complex of the Cortelezzii series (Diptera: Psychodidae) and Description of Evandromyia chacuensis sp. nov., a New Phlebotomine Species of the Chaco Region, Argentina

Abstract: A new species of phlebotomine sand fly is described and illustrated based on male and female specimens collected in rural and semi-urban areas of the Chaco Province, Argentina. A separation of the Cortelezzii series in two species complexes is proposed, as is a species key for its identification. The morphological characters of the new species permit its inclusion in the Cortelezzii series of genus Evandromyia, subgenus Barrettomyia (Diptera: Psychodidae). The species is named Evandromyia chacuensis sp. nov. S… Show more

“…The identification was performed according to Galati [23]; abbreviations by Marcondes are followed [24]. As Evandromyia cortelezzii and E. sallesi females cannot be discriminated at the species level by morphology, individuals are reported as Cortelezzii complex [25].…”

“…However, the low abundance of Lu. longipalpis in Salvador Mazza and Tartagal is suggestive of rural VL foci more than the urban foci of the recent urban dispersion wave, while the relative abundance of other species resembles the population assemblages of the rural xerophilic Chaco region, where the historical VL cases were reported in the early twentieth century 12 …”

“…Species identification was determined using the updated version of the classification proposed by Galati in 2003 [36]. The females of Evandromyia sallesi and Evandromyia cortelezzii, were identified as belonging to the "Cortelezzii complex" since they are undistinguishable by their morphology [37]. The abbreviation of the genera followed the proposal of Marcondes [38].…”
