Report of new cases of Trypanosoma caninum in Brazil

Abstract: Introduction: Trypanosoma caninum is a protozoan species recently described in dogs, whose occurrence has been reported in areas of overlap with visceral leishmaniasis. Methods: Trypanosoma sp. were isolated from nine dogs and characterized by molecular methods. Results: PCR and sequencing confi rmed the presence of T. caninum in all dogs, revealing two new areas of transmission: Barra Mansa and São João do Piauí. Conclusions: The nine new cases described, when added to those already published, account for 62 … Show more

“…The use of specific T. caninum primers might be more effective for its detection, as described for LVC. In this study, there was no association of T. caninum or L. infantum infection with age, breed, and sex, which is in agreement with previous findings in cases of visceral leishmaniasis (Almeida et al, 2009;Oliveira et al, 2010), while T. caninum has been detected in asymptomatic dogs aged 3 to 5 years (Oliveira et al, 2015). Nevertheless, the present T. caninum infection rate should be accepted cautiously, due to the low number of infected dogs.…”

“…In this scenario, L. infantum infection has important public health implications (Madeira et al, 2006) due to the relevance of dogs as a reservoir of zoonotic visceral leishmaniasis. The recent isolation of T. caninum from dogs' skin samples in endemic areas for visceral leishmaniasis has called attention to this protozoan (Barros et al, 2012;Oliveira et al, 2015).…”

“…cruzi lysates or whole-cell epimastigote homogenates as antigenic matrices [10,1315]. This complex antigenic mixture of the variable component is highly sensitive and some drawbacks have been already described, such as difficult standardization, low specificity, and cross-reactivity with Leishmania spp., and other trypanosomatids [16,17]. Therefore, accurate serological diagnostic tests are needed to fill this gap.…”

“…It is interesting to note that all the 16 samples with conflicting results between the two tests originated from the dogs residing in areas with only occasional occurrences of CVL. Therefore, the possibility of interference from other infectious agents in these areas, including Trypanosoma cruzi, Trypanosoma caninum, Toxoplasma gondii, Neospora caninum, Babesia canis, and Ehrlichia canis, as previously observed 11,17,18 , must be considered. This possibility is reinforced by the reported 47% canine seroprevalence of parasites transmitted by ticks in the eastern region of Rio de Janeiro 19 and 80% seroprevalence in the surrounding area of the natural reserve in the state of Mato Grosso (unpublished data).…”
