Fertility of buds and pruning recommendation of different grapevine varieties grown in altitude regions of Santa Catarina State, Brazil

Abstract: Low bud fertility index is frequently observed in different grapevine varieties grown in high altitude of Santa Catarina Sate; in many cases less than one cluster per bud is observed. The objective of this study was to assess bud fertility of twenty six Vitis vinifera L. varieties and from this information, to recommend the method of pruning more suitable for these varieties in high altitude conditions. The grapevine canes and buds were collected from production vineyards located in São Joaquim, Santa Catarina… Show more

“…In a recent paper [34], two wine varieties, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, presented 90 and 94%, respectively, of actual fertile buds, higher than our values, but some other varieties such as Prosecco, Fiano, or Sagrantino had 30-40% of fertile buds, even lower than Sugraone in this trial. In a study on table grape varieties (Black Magic, Sugraone, Red Globe, Victoria, Michele Palieri, and Italia) conducted in Sardinia region, Italy [35], the actual fertile bud values were quite similar for Black Magic (86.9 vs. 86.0%), Sugraone (43.4 (22.1 vs. 16.9), and significantly different for Red Globe (5.5 vs. 11.7), Michele Palieri (8.0 vs. 14.3), and Italia (10.1 vs. 25.6).…”

“…Many international wine grape varieties generally show highly fertile buds in different worldwide environments, confirming their adaptability to various pedo-climatic conditions and vineyard managements, i.e., pruning, irrigation, fertilization, etc. [33,34].…”

“…Evaluating the productive parameters of the first crop (2018/19), no difference in the fertility index caused by the rootstocks and the spacing was found. Fertility is a genetic characteristic of grapevine varieties, and reflects the ability to differentiate vegetative buds from fruiting buds, which will determine their productivity (Meneguzzi et al, 2020).…”

“…However, it is not a constant value, as it depends on numerous factors, namely: variety, bud type (primary or secondary) and bud position in the cane, climate and vine physiology influence on the differentiation of the inflorescence primordia (Magalhães, 2015). An evaluation of bud fruitfulness can thus provide useful information for determining yield potential for the next growing season (May and Antcliff, 1973;Dry, 2000;Meneguzzi et al, 2020;Monteiro et al, 2021). The number of inflorescences, and therefore clusters per vine, can be responsible for about 60 % of seasonal yield variation, while the number of berries for approximately 30 % (Clingeleffer et al, 2001;Guilpart et al, 2014).…”
