Studies on lettuce genotypes growing in different environments and planting seasons are important for this crop because its productive potential is greatly affected by environmental conditions. The mixed model methodology (REML/BLUP) have been used to evaluate the effects of the genotype-environment interaction on crops. Thus, the objective of the present work was to estimate parameters of adaptability and the phenotypic stability in lettuce cultivars grown in a semiarid region of Brazil, using a mixed model. Twelve lettuce cultivars from the Americana (Angelina, Amélia, and Tainá), Crespa (Scarlet, Vera, Isabela, and Vanda), Mimosa (Mila, Mimosa, and Lavínia), and Lisa (Elisa and Regiane) groups were evaluated. The experiments were conducted in a randomized complete block design, with four replications. The genetic parameters were estimated by the REML/BLUP method; and the simultaneous selection of productivity, stability, and adaptability of the genotypes was based on harmonic means of relative performances of predicted genotypic values (HMRPPGV). The Amélia, Angelina, and Tainá cultivars stood out for yield. The Regiane and Elisa cultivars presented significant responses in yield and number of leaves and are the most suitable for growing in the environmental conditions of Mossoró, RN, Brazil. The Crespa and Mimosa groups presented no stability and adaptability to the environmental conditions in which the experiments were conducted. More genotypes of all lettuce groups should be evaluated, and breeding programs should be developed to obtain genotypes with higher productivity, quality, and resistance to heat for semiarid regions. ADAPTABILIDADE E ESTABILIDADE FENOTÍPICA DE CULTIVARES DE ALFACE EM REGIÃO DE CLIMA SEMIÁRIDORESUMO -O estudo de genótipos, em diferentes ambientes ou épocas de cultivo, tem grande importância para a cultura da alface, cuja expressão do potencial produtivo é influenciada pelas condições ambientais. Deste modo, a aplicação da metodologia de modelos mistos (REML/BLUP) tem sido utilizada para avaliar os efeitos da interação genótipo x ambiente. Assim, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi estimar os parâmetros de adaptabilidade e estabilidade fenotípica que estão relacionados a produção de cultivares de alface em região de clima semiárido utilizando modelo misto. Avaliaram-se doze cultivares de alface dos grupos Americana (quatro repetições. Os parâmetros genéticos foram estimados pela metodologia REML/BLUP e a seleção simultânea da produtividade, estabilidade e adaptabilidade dos genótipos, baseou-se no método da média harmônica da performance relativa dos valores genotípicos preditos (MHPRVG). As cultivares Amélia, Angelina e Tainá sobressaíram-se para a produtividade. As cultivares Regiane e Elisa foram responsivas para o número de folhas e produtividade, sendo as mais indicadas para o cultivo nas condições de Mossoró. Plant growth promotion by microorganisms may be a viable alternative to increase lettuce production through pathogens control and nutrients absorption increase. Trichoderma and Pseudomonas genus are examples of widely studied microorganisms with the capacity to promote plant growth. However, there are still gaps regarding the action of the combined effect of these two microorganisms. Therefore, the objective of this study was to evaluate the combined effect of Pseudomonas sp. UAGF14 and Trichoderma aureoviride URM5158 on the development of lettuce plants. The experimental design was completely randomized, with five treatments: CONT (control), CM (soil with organic fertilization), CMB (soil with organic fertilization and Pseudomonas sp.), CMF (soil with organic fertilization and T. aureoviride), and CMFB (soil with organic fertilization, Pseudomonas sp. and T. aureoviride), with ten repetitions. At 30, 40 and 60 days after sowing, the following parameters were analyzed: plant and canopy height and number of leaves. At 60 days after emergence, shoot dry matter, leaf area, root dry matter, root length and chlorophyll were analyzed. Catalase, peroxidase and polyphenol oxidase enzymatic activity were determined. The CMFB treatment had the highest means of lettuce growth promotion, confirming the synergistic effect of the combination of the two microorganism types, as it increased height, canopy, shoot and root dry matter, and chlorophyll levels compared to CONT, although did not differ from CM in some variables. Enzymatic activity was also influenced by the action of these microorganisms combined, evidencing by polyphenol oxidase increase. The CMFB or CM were efficient in promoting lettuce growth, showing positive response to the plant morphological and physiological characteristics. However, few responses were observed in lettuce plant growth in the first cycle evaluated after 60 days, compared CM and CMFB treatments, but both treatments showed superiority in lettuce plant growth submitted to CONT treatment. Therefore, further studies are needed to estimate the long-term effects of combined effect of Pseudomonas sp. UAGF14 and T. aureoviride URM5158 on crop productivity in field conditions.

Lettuce is a crop originating from temperate climate, and for this reason, when cultivated in semiarid region, characterized by high luminosity and temperature, major losses in productivity and quality occur. The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of different levels of shade on yield and quality of lettuce cultivars in semiarid conditions. The experiment was conducted under field conditions at the Human and Agricultural Sciences Center at State University of Paraiba, Brazil, in randomized blocks with parcels divided into 4 × 4 factorial space, and four repetitions. The parcels received different shading levels (0, 30, 50 and 70%) with black polypropylene screen and sub parcels by lettuce cultivars: ‘Americana Irene’, ‘White Boston’, ‘Regina de Verão’ and ‘Green Salad Bowl’. The shading promoted higher performance in height, stem diameter, root length, pH and dry mass of lettuce plants when compared to those grown in the open-air, being the shading of 70% the more efficient. The ‘Americana Irene’ cultivar was distinguished in terms of plant height, foliage area, leaves dry mass and soluble solids, independently from the cultivation environment. With the shading, this cultivar improved the aerial shoot-root ratio and root dry mass.
