Background: Expenses with medicines are relevant and growing in health sector. Therefore, Pharmaceutical Services (PS) operations are designed to play a significant role in improving the social and economic contexts of health.Objective: This article aims to analyze if the Lean Healthcare (LH) practices have been contributing to the improvement of the PS processes.Methods: This study is based on PRISMA guidelines. The search was made in the literature through databases, such as Web of Science, Scopus, Medline (via PubMed), and Embase. In this study, 2878 identified papers were screened. Articles published up to the end of 2017 (and considering a 10-year period) were surveyed. In total, 43 studies met the pre-defined inclusion and exclusion criteria for data analysis in this work, 37 of which were published in 25 periodicals and six in congresses.Results: United States and United Kingdom concentrated 65% of the articles. A predominance of studies was observed in the context of the Hospital Pharmacy sector, emphasizing the LH practices in the Distribution and Use steps in the PS context.Conclusion: The literature on lean thinking applied in the specific context of the PS is relatively recent and scarce, highlighting a more pronounced growth in recent years. It was verified that LH practices in PS have been applied with more emphasis on reducing time and waste of resources, while contributing to process improvement and increased patient safety.

Investigating the Theoretical Constructs of a Green Lean Six Sigma Approach towards Environmental Sustainability: A Systematic Literature Review and Future Directions

Green lean six sigma (GLSS) is an emerging approach towards environmental sustainability in conjunction with operational achievements. The success of this approach is premised on an understanding of the different components of a GLSS program; being the determinants for its outcomes. The aim of this paper is to investigate the various constructs of GLSS that play an essential role in achieving environmental sustainability. For this purpose, a systematic review of available literature has been conducted to evaluate the drivers, enablers (tools), and outcomes of a GLSS strategy as well as its critical success factors and barriers. Findings reveal that these constructs of GLSS as a holistic approach can facilitate an organization to better accomplish environmental objectives such as waste minimization, emission reduction, and resource conservation as compared to constructs of only one or any two of these strategies. Based on the analysis, an integrated GLSS framework is developed for environmental sustainability in addition to identifying vital research gaps and future directions.

In the last decades, sustainable development has increasingly gained importance to service industry and the integration between Green, Lean and Six Sigma approaches in service systems is necessary in order to balance the need for operational efficiency with environmental commitment and social fairness. Because of that, the purpose of this paper is to critically review the Lean and Lean Six Sigma (LSS) methodologies and highlight their importance to achieve sustainable services. To do this, a systematic literature review of the subjects under investigation was conducted. The study has two major contributions. First, it is one of the first researches that examine the compatibility and divergences of Green, Lean and Six Sigma concepts and implications regarding its sustainable implementation in service industry. Second, it provides a holistic Green LSS framework attempting to help practitioners to find ways of institutionalizing it in numerous kinds of services, by pointing out nine critical factors for its implementation, such as continuous customer satisfaction, ethical relations and regulatory compliance, focus on knowledge management and human behaviors, and effective Jidoka automation. The proposed framework indicates new paradigms and pathways to achieve the balance in technical, economic, social and environmental priorities in services.
