While nursing is an ethical profession, unethical behavior among nurses is increasing worldwide. This study examined the effects of an ethics seminar on nurses' moral sensitivity and ethical behavior. A total of 37 nurses (17 experimental, 20 control) were recruited. The ethics seminar was held over a 6-month period from May to October, 2018, and comprised six sessions held once a month for two hours. Moral sensitivity and unethical behavior were measured at the start and end of the seminar. Moral sensitivity and unethical behavior showed a negative correlation (r= -.455, p&lt;0.01). After the ethics seminar, the experimental group's moral sensitivity was significantly increased (t = -1.039, p = 0.314). The mean scores of unethical behavior at pre and post-test in the experimental group were 12.59 and 9.47, respectively. This was a statistically significant difference (t = 3.118, p = 0.004). There was no statistically significant difference in the mean score in both moral sensitivity and unethical behavior in the control group. We conclude that ethics seminars can enhance moral sensitivity and reduce the risk of unethical behavior among nurses. Regular ethics seminars and training must be provided to nurses as a matter of policy.

Objetivo: conhecer as percepções de enfermeiros acerca do exercício de advocacy sob perspectiva filosófica gadameriana. Método: estudo descritivo, com abordagem qualitativa, com base no referencial teórico da Hermenêutica Filosófica. Participaram treze enfermeiros de duas unidades de internação de um hospital de ensino na região sul do Brasil. A coleta de dados ocorreu entre abril a junho de 2019, com utilização da técnica de entrevista semiestruturada e tratados por análise textual discursiva. O estudo foi aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa. Resultados: da análise dos depoimentos emergiram duas categorias: formação ética e o exercício de advocacy por enfermeiros: fragilidades ou fortalezas? e situações de conflitos emergentes do exercício de advocacy. Conclusão: a formação profissional e a experiência prática constituem a base para o exercício de advocacy em enfermagem, fortalecendo-se com a consolidação de conhecimento e o tempo de atuação profissional.

Objective: to identify the main ethical problems and how these relate to the moral sensitivity of nurses working in a general medicine ward. Method: this qualitative, exploratory, and descriptive study was conducted in a university hospital located in the south of Brazil. A total of 18 nurses working in a general medicine ward were interviewed. A semi-structured interview script was used, and data were analyzed using discursive textual analysis. Results: nurses considered the main ethical problems to include conflicts at the institutional level, situations involving conflicts with patients and/or family members, and conflicts within the staff. The perception of nurses and how they deal with these problems relate to moral sensitivity. Two categories emerged: experiencing ethical problems, and relationship with moral sensitivity. Conclusion: because of the multidimensional nature of moral sensitivity, it trains and enables nurses to recognize and deal with ethical problems faced in clinical practice so that nurses become able to make fair and prudent decisions, improving the quality of nursing care.
