Classification tree to screen for the nursing diagnosis Ineffective airway clearance

Abstract: Objective: to identify the defining characteristics of Ineffective airway clearance with better predictive power using classification trees. Method: the predictive power of the defining characteristics of Ineffective airway clearance was evaluated based on classification trees generated from the data of 249 children with acute respiratory infection. Results: Ineffective cough and adventitious breath sounds were identified as the main defining characteristics when screening for Ineffective airway clearance in… Show more

“…After the activation of these mechanisms of compensation, the individual presents a sensation of respiratory discomfort, focusing on dyspnea. 22 The factors that influence a greater occurrence of the diagnosis of ineffective airway clearance are the narrow airway and propensity to secretion retention, since the infant's respiratory system is immature. In the present study, the narrowing is explained by the micrognathia and glossoptosis that reduce the nasopharyngeal space.…”

“…Considering that patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) have several signs and symptoms and that many of these clinical indicators are associated with similar ND, errors in the inference of the diagnosis can compromise the care plan and lead to unsatisfactory results, impairing the nursing practice (5) . Therefore, it is important to have an accurate diagnostic process that reflects the real situation, giving the patient the possibility of receiving adequate treatment, both regarding time and quality, and preventing other complications and death (6) .…”

“…Aiming to enhance the diagnostic process, ND validation studies attempt to refine the classifications and consolidate this knowledge based on results with specific populations (7) . This includes the use of strategies that help identifying clinical indicators that characterize the phenomenon presented by patients, making clinical reasoning and decision making more accurate (5) .…”

“…This may be related to unfavorable health conditions due to low income, inappropriate health and nutritional conditions, as well as an unexpected immune response (3) . Among the main signs and symptoms that can be identified in children with respiratory infections, the presence of respiratory effort, such as intercostal drawing and nasal flaring, cyanosis, apnea, drowsiness, irritability, slow perfusion and tachycardia (1) .…”
