Presumed Zika virus-related congenital brain malformations: the spectrum of CT and MRI findings in fetuses and newborns

Abstract: The new epidemic of Zika virus infection raises grave concerns, especially with the increasingly-recognized link between emerging cases of microcephaly and this infectious disease. Besides small cranial dimensions, there are striking morphologic anomalies in the fetal brain. Key anomalies include cortical developmental malformations and a peculiar distribution of pathologic calcifications. These potentially indicate a new pattern of congenital central nervous system infection. Methods: Eight women underwent fe… Show more

“…Traveller/non-traveller populations: In this update, we found further evidence that congenital abnormalities occurred in infants born to women travellers returning from ZIKV-affected areas and women remaining in those areas. In total, 25 publications report on 272 congenital abnormalities due to ZIKV infection in travellers 27, 29, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 42, 45, 56, 58, 61, 89, 94, 98, 109, 117, 122, 123, 137, 140, 151, 153, 166, 173 , with 109 publications reporting congenital abnormalities due to ZIKV in 2652 non travellers 2426, 28, 31, 33, 35, 37, 3941, 43, 44, 4648, 50, 51, 54, 57, 60, 6279, 81, 8385, 87, 88, 9093, 95– 97, 100, 101, 104– 106, 110113, 115, 116, 118, 119, 121, 124135, 142147, 149, 152, 154, 156164, 167, 168, 171, 172, 175180, 182, …”

“…In addition, MRI is able to better visualize polymicrogyria, most frequently seen in the frontal lobes [87]. MRI also allows superior visualization of brainstem hypoplasia, cerebellar hemispheric volume loss, and other described abnormalities such as pseudocysts [89]. Table 1 summarizes the spectrum of brain and systemic abnormalities in CZS.…”

“…17 documents were excluded because there was no investigation with CT or MRI and 2 because they were experimental studies, resulting in a total of 22 studies. Subsequently, 11 articles were excluded because they were not a case report, and 4 were excluded because they did not include the trimester of gestation that occurred the infection, totalizing 7 articles included [9][10][11][12][13][14][15]. The complete flowchart is shown in Figure 1.…”
