Prevalence of stroke and associated disability in Brazil: National Health Survey - 2013

Abstract: There is scarce data about prevalence of stroke in Brazil. The National Health Survey (PNS) is a community-based epidemiological survey, with a nationally representative sample to assess the absolute numbers with respective prevalence rates of stroke and post-stroke disabilities. It was estimated 2,231.000 stroke and 568,000 stroke cases with severe disabilities. The point prevalences was 1.6% and 1.4% in men and women, respectively. The prevalences of post-stroke disabilities were 29.5% for men and 21.5% for … Show more

“…This hypothesis is based on information from Joinville, Santa Catarina, where there was a reduction in the lethality concomitant with the reduction in incidence -a much greater number of cases of hemorrhage than of cerebral ischemia 24,25 . However, when the National Health Survey 2013 evaluated the prevalence of cerebrovascular disease, there was an inverse relationship with the level of formal education, an association that increased when the presence of motor sequelae due to this disease was analyzed separately 26 . Finally, in another evaluation of GBD 2015, arterial hypertension, the most relevant risk factor for cerebrovascular disease, was identified as the main factor in terms of all-cause mortality and morbidity 27 .…”

“…In Brazil, results from a community-based survey conducted in 2013 showed that 25% (568,000 / 2,231,000) of stroke cases remain with severe disabilities [10]. However, data from population-based studies are very scarce in low- and middle-income countries.…”

“…23 In a similar survey in Brazil the prevalence of disability was 29.5% in men and 21.5% in women. 24 Neither study delimited age and the Brazilian study did not apply an instrument to assess functional capacity.…”

“…13,28 The Pesquisa Nacional de Saude (National Health Survey) (PNS) associated a higher prevalence of CVAs with a lower educational level, but found no association between disability and the level of formal education among those who survived CVAs. 24 In the last decade, according to IBGE data, there was a reduction in the illiteracy rate among all age groups except for the population aged over 65 years. Thus, the relative weight of the elderly in the illiterate population grew from 46.7% in 2004 to 58.2% in 2014.…”
