Chitosan gels for buccal delivery of Schinus molle L. essential oil in dogs: characterization and antimicrobial activity in vitro

Abstract: Periodontal disease is considered the main oral cavity disorder in dogs. Essential oils have the potential for use in the prevention and treatment of oral diseases. The antimicrobial activity of Schinus molle L. essential oil (SMEO) has already been reported. Chitosan, a natural product with antimicrobial activity and good biocompatibility has potential in biodental applications. In this study, we evaluated the in vitro antimicrobial activity of SMEO against bacteria associated with periodontal disease in dogs… Show more

“…Prepared hydrogels were then mixed with AgNPs (1% w/w), triethanolamine 0.2% v/w dimethyl sulfoxide 1% v/w, and methylparaben 0.02% w/w. AgNPs loaded chitosan-based gels (AgNPs-CBG) was then mixed with a digitally controlled overhead mixer for overnight to complete the homogenization using a mechanical homogenizer (T-18 Ultra-Turrax, IKA Ltd., Staufen, Germany) [27][28][29].…”

“…In this test, the AgNPs loaded chitosan chitosan-based gels (1 gm) subjected to freezing and thawing 2 days' cycles at 45 • C (Hot) and 4 • C (Cold). Besides, centrifugal testing was performed by taking the sample (1 gm) in Eppendorf tube, kept it in the rotor sample holder, centrifuged at 3000 rpm for 30 min at 6 • C, and observed for sediment in the bottom [28].…”

“…CS gels loaded with Schinus molle L. essential oil were evaluated for activity against bacteria associated with periodontal disease in dogs [ 25 ]. These gels showed their potential as a delivery system for Schinus molle L. and presented ideal physicochemical and rheological properties required for application on buccal tissue, such as good stability and antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria ( Staphylococcus spp., Streptococcus, Corynebacterium spp., Pseudomonas spp.)…”
