Influence of hesperidin and vitamin C on glycemic parameters, lipid profile, and DNA damage in rats treated with sucrose overload

Abstract: We evaluated the influence of hesperidin and vitamin C (VitC) on glycemic parameters, lipid profile, and DNA damage in male Wistar rats treated with sucrose overload. Rats were divided into six experimental groups: I-water control; II-sucrose control; III-hesperidin control; IV-VitC control; V-co-treatment of sucrose plus hesperidin; VI-co-treatment of sucrose plus VitC. We measured the levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL-c, LDL-c, fasting glucose, and glycated hemoglobin (A1C). DNA damage was eval… Show more

“…The elevated serum LDL-c, triglyceride, and total cholesterol values here in hyperthyroidism group are consistent with those reported by many previous studies (1,41). Likewise, Franke et al (42) found that HDL-c level was significantly reduced in hyperthyroidism model rats.…”

“…58 In addition, hesperidin stimulates glycogenolysis and glycolysis in isolated perfused rat liver 57 and reduces glucose levels induced in porcine streptozotocininduced diabetic and diabetic rat models. 82 The postprandial glycemic response of orange juice can be adjusted by partially inhibiting the intestinal glucose transporter according to the concentration of sugar and hesperidin, 83 indicating that hesperidin can be used to prevent postprandial hyperglycemia. 40 PPAR-c is a nuclear protein transcription factor that regulates lipid and glucose metabolism, and hesperidin maintains glucose metabolism by regulating PPAR-c activation and inhibiting fat accumulation.…”

“…Also, in the liver of rats, hesperidin stimulates glycogenolysis and glycolysis (do Nascimento et al, 2018 ). Moreover, the hypoglycemic effects of hesperidin have been shown in rat models of diabetes (Franke et al, 2018 ). Several studies have demonstrated that hesperidin might potentially be used to regulate postprandial blood glucose by reducing the intestinal glucose transporter (Kerimi et al, 2019 ; Shen et al, 2012 ).…”
