New Crocodyliform specimens from Recôncavo-Tucano Basin (Early Cretaceous) of Bahia, Brazil

Abstract: In 1940, L.I. Price and A. Oliveira recovered four crocodyliform specimens from the Early Cretaceous Bahia Supergroup (Recôncavo-Tucano Basin). In the present work, we describe four different fossil specimens: an osteoderm, a fibula, a tibia, and some autopodial bones. No further identification besides Mesoeucrocodylia was made due to their fragmentary nature and the reduced number of recognized synapomorphies for more inclusive clades. With exception of the fibula, all other specimens have at least one partic… Show more

“…The evolutionary history of Crocodyliformes is characterized by high ecological diversity, which can be traced to several episodes of radiation along the Jurassic and Cretaceous (Stubbs et al 2013, Toljagic & Butler 2013. In the last years, several new specimens were discovered particularly in South America (e.g., Souza & Campos 2019), increasing the scope of studies about these reptiles (e.g., Wilberg 2017, Cardia et al 2019). An extensive fossil record reveals different body plans and a wide range of variation in skull morphology, notably in the shape of the rostrum, and in patterns of dentition (Riff & Kellner 2001, Ösi 2013, Wilberg 2017.…”

“…In terms of direct guidance, even though he is not linked to a university, he has given the opportunity to dozens of students to pursue their master´s and doctoral degrees and, on several occasions, has acted as an informal advisor. Among his latest papers, he published with a young paleontologist a description of new crocodylomorphs from his home state of Bahia (Souza & Campos 2019). He has been honored several times with genera and species dedicated to him (e.g., Leonardi 1979, Kellner 1987, including in the present volume (Oliveira et al 2021).…”
