Effects of electroacupuncture on stress and anxiety-related responses in rats

Abstract: The aim of this work was to investigate if eletroacupuncture at PC6 would modulate the stress-induced anxiety-like behavior and the level of activation of several brain areas. Rats were distributed in groups: control; submitted to immobilization; submitted to immobilization and eletroacupuncture at PC6 or at the tail. Immobilization increased grooming and decreased stretched attend postures and the time spent in the open arms of the ele-vated plus-maze. Eletroacupuncture at PC6 or tail canceled the effect of i… Show more

“…About 19% of patients with temporal lobe epilepsy had an anxiety disorder, suggesting the linkage of temporal lobe dysfunction with anxiety. 15 The parahippocampal gyrus, located between the hippocampus and temporal lobe, functions in spatial memory and navigation. Lines of evidence have reported that the activity of the parahippocampal gyrus is involved in the regulation of sensory memory.…”

“…In addition, a randomized controlled trial showed that stimulation of Yintang acupoint resulted in a significant reduction of anxiety in patients planned for neurosurgical intervention [21]. The mechanism of acupuncture in causing decreased anxiety based on magnetic resonance imaging is related to reduced activity of the CNS components like the limbic system, amygdala, and hypothalamus [46]. Auricular acupuncture has been found to be effective in treating chronic anxiety disorder, and a similar anxiolytic effect was reported in studies related to dental anxiety [47,48].…”

“…As a form of acupuncture, electroacupuncture (EA) reinforces the function of acupuncture by continuous stimulation of acupoints with a small electric current. Accumulating evidence indicates that EA could attenuate the stress response [31][32][33] and regulate the HPA axis [34,35] and DA in the brain [36].…”
