Floristic evolution in an agroforestry system cultivation in Southern Brazil

Abstract: Bracatinga (Mimosa scabrella Bentham) is an important pioneer tree species in Ombrophylous MixedForest of Brazil and is widely used as an energy source. In traditional agroforestry systems, regeneration is induced by fi re, then pure and dense stands known as bracatinga stands (bracatingais) are formed. In the fi rst year, annual crops are intercalated with the seedlings. At that time the seedlings are thinned, then the stands remain at a fallow period and cut at seven years old. The species is very important … Show more

“…Thus, lower diversity index values in the top-left part of the maps, between the Y-coordinate 250-500 m and X-coordinate 0-200 m (Figure 4), were caused by the higher dominance of pioneer species, especially Mimosa scabrella Benth. (Silva et al 2016), resulting in local diversity reductions for Shannon's and Margalef's indices and increasing dominance for Simpson's index.…”

“…Here, we identify several groups of species that can be combined in mixed cropping systems based on similar climatic niche requirements under current and future climatic conditions. Important economic species such as Araucaria angustifolia (Zechini et al, 2018), Acca sellowiana (Donazzolo et al, 2020), Euterpe edulis (Favreto et al, 2010), I. paraguariensis (Siminski et al, 2016) and M. scabrella (da Silva et al, 2016) have already been traditionally combined with other agricultural crops in managed landscapes in southern Brazil. However, other popularly known medicinal species such as Bugweed Solanum mauritianum , Espinheira‐santa Monteverdia ilicifolia and Green Pepper Basil Ocimum carnosum remain neglected and underutilized, particularly due to imposed and deeply rooted cultural standards, which favour exotic products and crops (Coradin et al, 2011).…”

“…In spite of the fact that not all species have already been found in current agricultural systems or been managed by farmers, they all have one or multiple uses and can be combined in mixed cropping. Some species such as A. angustifolia 31 , A. sellowiana 32 , E. edulis 33 , Ilex paraguariensis 34 , and Mimosa scabrella 35 have already traditionally been combined with other agricultural crops in managed landscapes in southern Brazil. All taxonomic authorities and species common names are listed in Supplementary Table S3 .…”
