Bioavailability of heavy metals at contaminated sites is largely controlled by the physicochemical properties of the environmental media such as dissolved organic matter, hydroxides and clay colloids, pH, soil cation exchange capacity and oxidation-reduction potential. The aim of this study was to investigate soil pH and heavy metal solubility effect by levels of humic and fulvic acids applied in soil samples with different levels of contamination by heavy metals. The soil samples used in this study were collected in a known metal-contaminated site. Humic acid (HA) and fulvic acid (FA) were purchased as a commercially available liquid material extracted from Leonardite. The experiment was carried out in a factorial scheme of 4 × (4 + 1), with four contaminated soil samples and four treatments, comprised of two levels of HA, two levels of FA and a control. The HA treatments increased the solubility of Cu, Zn, Ni, Cr, Cd, Pb, As and Ba from soils, while FA treatments decreased, thus raising or not their availability and mobility in soil. Humic acid concentration did not influence soil pH and FA decreased soil pH until 0.7 units. The initial heavy metal concentration in soil affects the magnitude of the processes involving humic substances. The lower releases of heavy metals by FA verified the importance of the complexation properties of organic compounds. These results appear to encourage the use of HA for increased plant-availability of heavy metals in remediation projects and the use of FA for decreased plant-availability of heavy metals at contaminated sites with a risk of introducing metals into the food chain.

Certain parts of global forests show elevated concentrations of trace elements as a result of industry processes, places such as wood depots and plant protection products, which together degrade the forest environment. This paper examines a timber depot that used wood preservatives in World War II located in the Warcino Forest Inspectorate (Poland). It presents monitory findings on the degree to which the upper soil layer in the depot area has been contaminated by wood preservatives. Within two forest divisions, a network of soil extraction points was established, distinguished into three separate categories that demarcate the degrees of vegetation coverage and growth of the common pine. These were Area A (area with a pine stand that is several dozen years-old), Area B (areas with a pine stand that is approximately a dozen years-old) and Area C (areas without a pine stand). The Cu concentration in the surface categories was respectively 141.03/187.54/834.43 mg·kg−1. Above 600% in Cu concentration was noted in category C in comparison to category A. It was found that the content of most elements (B, Cd, Co, Cr, Fe, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Zn) did not exceed the permissible values according to the Regulation of the Minister of the Environment on soil quality standards; however, in the case of Cu, the limit values established for forest and agricultural soils were exceeded, with the highest Cu contents found in the ‘C’ category. The results obtained confirm that the wood protection chemicals, such as copper sulphate, affected the long-term pollution of forest soils.

Greenhouse gases increased in concentrations over pre-industrial values by 257% for methane and 145% for carbon dioxide in 2016. Such increased levels are the main climate change drivers and may affect aquatic systems that accumulate and carry carbon to the ocean and the atmosphere. Additionally, these systems are sensitive to environmental changes since their physical, chemical and biological properties respond rapidly to changes. Therefore, this study focus on the greenhouse gases dynamic over an urban eutrophic tropical lagoon. Samplings were performed in the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon by covering four periods in 2016 (April, June, October and December). Mean diffusive flux was -1,466.8 mg m -2 d -1 of carbon dioxide and 113.7 mg m -2 d -1 of methane. Regarding the bubbling, fluxes were 58.28 mg m -2 d -1 for methane and negligible for carbon dioxide (mean value of 5.01 mg m -2 d -1 ). Environmental parameters such as depth, water temperature and sediment particle size were strongly related to the fluxes. In conclusion, the region is a sink of carbon dioxide and a source of methane to the atmosphere. Additionally, the rivers discharge impacts the lagoon by generating a methane hotspot emission region.
