The Role of the Humic Substances in the Fractioning of Heavy Metals in Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon, Rio de Janeiro - Brazil

Abstract: One of the main results of the processes related to urbanization is the contamination of the adjacent water bodies. Inserted in this context, the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon is situated in the south zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro. This ecosystem receives several inputs containing all sorts of pollutants, including heavy metals. The present work aimed to study the partitioning of heavy metals in the sediments of Rodrigo de Freitas and the influence of organic matter in this fractionation dynamic. The results … Show more

“…However, although humic substances have been investigated as a washing agent for soils contaminated by polyaromatic hydrocarbons and other organic pollutants (Borggaard et al, 2009;Soleimani et al, 2010) and testing on heavy metal polluted soils is limited, in recent years some studies have been performed (Fonseca et al, 2013;Tang et al, 2014;An et al, 2015;Hwang et al, 2015).…”

“…It is important to note that humic acids contained in peat soils may limit electron mobility or immobilise Cu in the soil profile (Fonseca et al 2013). It is assumed that the use of copper sulphate as a wood preservative has contaminated the soil with copper.…”

“…Coastal lagoons are fragile marine environments and have suffered from urban expansion. High population densities in their environment expose them to eutrophication processes due to increases in nutrient concentrations in water and pollution (Marques-Junior et al, 2009;Van Weerelt et al, 2012;Fonseca et al, 2013). The eutrophication can be natural due to the excessive input of nutrients into the ecosystem, but anthropogenic activities can also accelerate it.…”
