PurposeThe author aims to develop an employee competency framework for a volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity (VUCA) environment and propose learning and development (L&D) interventions for organisations and employees to develop competencies for thriving in a VUCA environment.Design/methodology/approachThe framework synthesis method was used to determine employee competencies that are essential in a VUCA world.FindingsThe author identified 10 competencies that are essential for employee development in a VUCA world. The author categorised these employee competencies as cognitive (cognitive flexibility, agility mindset and personal ambidexterity), cross-cultural (cross-cultural intelligence and cross-cultural collaboration), analytical (creativity and complex problem solving) and personal effectiveness competencies (personal resilience, continuous learning and adaptive mindset).Practical implicationsThe proposed competencies could be used for the personal development of employees and organisations. The VUCA competency framework developed in this study includes behavioural dimensions for each competency, which could be used in self-assessment, recruitment and selection and talent and performance management. Furthermore, the author proposes L&D interventions required for developing these competencies. Overall, this study contributes to human resources (HR) development in the VUCA era by proposing the development of specific individual competencies as necessary conditions for survival and growth.Originality/valueVUCA competencies empower employees to not only survive but also thrive in an unpredictable and rapidly changing world. By incorporating these competencies in L&D interventions, organisations can help employees develop the necessary competencies to thrive in a VUCA environment, thus contributing to their personal and organisational success.

This study addresses the "projectification of society" and its alignment with the VUCA framework (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, Ambiguity). Four widely used international project management standards-PMI, IPMA, PRINCE2, and PM 2 -are evaluated for their suitability in the VUCA environment. The research employs a multicriteria approach, specifically the Weighted Sum Approach method, considering factors like volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. The selected standards are scrutinized based on their adaptability to VUCA challenges, with a focus on PMBOK, IPMA, PRINCE2, and PM 2 . The seventh edition of the PMBOK has been evaluated on the first position. The study emphasizes the crucial role of selecting an appropriate project management standard for success in navigating the dynamic VUCA world. The results confirmed this and brought a number of recommendations for managing projects in a VUCA environment.

No contexto dinâmico da transformação digital, os projetos de tecnologia e inovação enfrentam uma complexidade crescente. Para lidar com esse desafio, organizações têm buscado modelos de gerenciamento de projetos mais flexíveis, capazes de gerenciar as constantes mudanças desse ambiente. Este estudo se propõe a examinar como uma empresa siderúrgica, equilibra as práticas de gerenciamento de projetos tradicionais e ágeis durante o desenvolvimento de projetos de tecnologia. O estudo fundamentou-se em uma revisão da literatura, dos temas de gerenciamento de projetos e a estruturação do modelo híbrido de gestão. A metodologia utilizada foi a pesquisa qualitativa caracterizada pela natureza aplicada. Foi realizado um Estudo de Caso para elucidar pontos chaves da discussão proposta. A contribuição científica deste estudo reside em sua capacidade de demonstrar como organizações podem se adaptar ao ambiente dinâmico da transformação digital, empregando abordagens híbridas. Os resultados obtidos durante a pesquisa são apresentados, destacando como a flexibilidade e capacidade de adaptação são relevantes para lidar com as complexidades do ambiente e, também, como a menor previsibilidade nos prazos e dependência contínua da comunicação indicam a necessidade de atenção constante. Por fim, conclui-se que a metodologia hibrida é necessária para lidar com projetos que envolvem tecnologia e inovação.
