Planning theory- and evidence-based behavior change interventions: a conceptual review of the intervention mapping protocol

Abstract: This paper discusses the Intervention Mapping (IM) protocol for planning theory-and evidence-based behavior change interventions. IM has been developed in the field of health promotion in 1998 and has mostly been applied in that field, but applications in other fields are emerging. IM can be used for any intervention that involves changing behavior. The paper discusses the protocol and its basic issues and presents in-depth examples of its use in-and outside the health promotion field: Empowerment, return to w… Show more

“…The BCW approach has been described as over‐systematized and oversimplified, and critics question whether the COM‐B model can explain all aspects of a behavioural problem in sufficient depth . IM has faced the opposite criticism and been described as ‘complex, elaborate, tiresome, expensive, and time consuming’ given the multiple steps and elements.…”

“…Quality assessment Papers selected for retrieval will be evaluated by two independent authors for methodological validation before entering the review using 22-item checklist "Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE)", [24]. Articles will be classified as good (scores of [17][18][19][20][21][22], medium (8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16), and poor (1-7). Then, a critical appraisal of the qualitative studies will be conducted using the checklist for qualitative research with 10 items [25].…”

“…IM is characterized by three factors as follows: ecological approach, participation of all stakeholders, and the use of theory and evidence. IM describes the process of planning health promotion programs in six steps as follows: (1) assessing the needs; (2) creating the matrix of goals for behavioral change; (3) choosing theory-based approaches and practical strategies; (4) developing the intervention; (5) planning the implementation of program; and (6) planning the evaluation [19].…”

“…The needs assessment was performed via a set of methods (Kok, Peters, & Ruiter, 2017), including documental analysis, literature review, participant observations, and semi-structured interviews. Initially, a documental analysis consisting of the reading of the GIPSI Orientation Manual (GIPSI, 2018) and the results of internet searches for pages with information about the program, which returned the GIPSI Facebook Page (GIPSI, 2019) and UnB's main website (http://www.unb.br).…”

“…Later, this was also done with the Institute of Mental Health team. In this stage, strategies for the adoption, implementation, and sustainability of the program in the context of its application and target group were assessed (Kok et al, 2017). All resources necessary for the application of the methods, including facilities, furniture, audiovisual and sound resources, mats and cushions for the breathwork practice, stationery for the making of mandalas in the integration stage of the experiment, and other general-objective materials were secured and provided.…”
