Humoral immune response in dogs and cats vaccinated against rabies in southeastern Brazil

Abstract: BackgroundBrazil holds annual nationwide public campaigns to vaccinate dogs and cats against rabies. The presence of rabies antibodies in these animals, which are among the main transmitters of rabies to humans, is a good indicator that they are immunized and protected.MethodsIn the present study we analyzed 834 serum samples from dogs and cats from the Southeast of Brazil (Presidente Prudente and Dracena cities), 12 months after the 2009 vaccination campaign. We used the technique known as rapid fluorescent f… Show more

“…Failures in the immunization to RABV were also reported by ALBAS et al (2013) when analyzing the serological response in 834 vaccinated dogs and cats in southeastern Brazil. Only 52.1% of the vaccinated dogs had detectable neutralizing antibodies titers.…”

“…In Brazil, official immunization programs were successful in reducing the incidence of the disease, leading to virtual eradication of rabies in most states. Unfortunately, these programs were eventually discontinued, being gradually replaced by voluntary and/or unofficial campaigns/initiatives of immunization (ALBAS et al, 2013). These initiatives are generally isolated, uncoordinated and are not subjected to official/governmental control.…”

“…Considerably, our results ( Fig.2A) demonstrate a significant difference with a higher prevalence of neutralizing antibodies in vaccinated cats compared to dogs. Similarly, in a study of samples of dogs and cats vaccinated in two cities in Southeastern Brazil, significant differences were found in the development of antibodies between dogs and cats in only one of the cities studied (Albas et al 2013). This finding could explain that the differential response of dogs and cats is mainly mediated by anthropogenic factors such as the vaccination culture and the quality of the vaccination, etc., rather than by a differential biological response between the two species (Moore et al 2015, Tordo et al 2005.…”

“…The government should set up monitoring centers for laboratory identification of rabies virus in areas of high incidence in order to prevent its transmission. Latin American countries were almost able to eradicate rabies by strengthening measures against its virus through mass vaccination of dogs, for example [ 12 , 13 ]. These successful experiences suggest that it is possible to fight the disease by means of virus control and prevention.…”
