“…As a result, the Energy Efficiency of Buildings Directive (EPBD, 2002/91/EC; 2010/31/UE; 2018/844/UE) and the Energy Efficiency Directive (2012/27/UE) necessitate the main communitarian policy to tackle emissions and energy expenditure in existing and new premises. “…However, the research question which inspired our study is the following: What are the prosocial motives of solar entrepreneurs as they combat energy poverty in South Africa? Centered on a real problem (Carboni et al, 2019), neglected problems with positive externalities (Santos, 2012), and following the suggestions of Dudovskiy (2019), Benoot et al (2016), Jacques‐Aviñó and López (2019), among others, the study is qualitative in design, focusing on purposefully selected formal hybrid SEs who have been sourced from their professional networks, involved in solar energy public service delivery, in collaboration with local municipalities, and whose clients are also business beneficiaries and have automatic value spill overs. These hybrids have low risk of mission drift and the achievement of financial sustainability is relatively easy.…”
